TWELVE of Passmores’ best science, technology and maths students represented the school in the annual Faraday National Competition, organised by the Institute of Engineering and Technology.

Students aged between 12 and 13 competed in teams to design and promote the best solution to a real-life engineering problem. As always, the challenge had been kept under wraps until the event started, and this year’s focus was revealed to be an examination the problems facing Thorpe Park. Students were required to use their skill, ingenuity and creative thinking to design a solution, whilst taking into account the range of identified criteria outlined in the design brief. These included how their product met the needs of different stakeholders.

The development of the product tested each group’s ability to organise themselves and work collaboratively, monitoring their expenditure and challenging their knowledge of construction and electronics.

In an exceptionally close run competition and a nail biting finish, Passmores narrowly missed out on first place, being beaten at the last minute by a single point. All the students who took part demonstrated high ability in maintaining focus, creativity and drive and were awarded with a certificate to commemorate their achievements.

Clive Benham, Head of ICT at Passmores said: ‘The Faraday competition offers students an exciting glimpse in to the world of engineers, scientists and mathematicians and an opportunity to develop solutions to real world problems faced by well-known companies. I was delighted by the way our students responded to the technological challenge and their ability to work co-operatively with each other to achieve their goal’.
