MORE people than ever before are using electric car charging points at Greater Anglia stations.

Greater Anglia has two electric car charging points at Norwich, Broxbourne, Bishop’s Stortford, Harlow Town, Ipswich, Cheshunt, Wickford, South Woodham Ferrers, Waltham Cross, Hertford East, Ely, Stansted Mountfitchet and Witham car parks.

And figures show that usage has increased by nearly 70% over the past two years, with drivers using enough electricity to keep an electric car on the road for more than five years.

Last year, 26,586 kWh worth of energy was used by passengers to charge electric cars on the Greater Anglia network.

Recent studies show that electric cars produce around 40% less emissions than petrol or diesel cars. Other benefits include cheaper running costs, cleaner air and quieter engines.

Jay Thompson, Greater Anglia’s Head of Safety, Security and Sustainability, said: “There is a range of ways for people to get to our stations, and we are pleased that more and more people are making use of the electric car charging points.

“Some stations are used more than others – Bishop’s Stortford has the most-used electric charging points on the Greater Anglia network, and usage at Norwich and Cheshunt is high. However, usage at some stations – particularly Stansted Mountfitchet and Hertford East – is low, and I would like to remind passengers that we have these brilliant facilities which they are welcome to use.

“At Greater Anglia we are committed to reducing our impact on the environment, so we are very pleased that we can offer free electric car charging points at some of our stations.”
