Harlow surgeon among the best surgical trainers in the UK

A SURGEON at The Princess Alexandra Hospital in Harlow has won acclaim as one of the top trainers for colorectal surgery in the UK.

Mr Narasimhaiah Srinivasaiah was shortlisted for the prestigious national Silver Scalpel surgical training award in the recently held Association of Surgeons in Training (ASIT) meeting at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. The award is given in recognition of excellence in surgical training.

Mr Srinivasaiah is a consultant colorectal surgeon at the hospital, and is also the surgical tutor for the Royal College of Surgeons and an Honorary Senior Lecturer at The Queen Mary University of London.

This is true recognition for the training, support and leadership qualities he imparts to his surgical trainees. Mr Srinivasaiah says that the patients are the greatest teachers in surgery and he is indebted to the people of Harlow.

“It is a true privilege to be a doctor and a teacher” he said.

The Silver Scalpel Award has played a vital part in recognising trainers that go the extra mile for their trainees, while at the same time promoting the highest standards of surgical training. Good training goes hand in hand with providing excellent patient care, and Silver Scalpel winners also deliver an exemplary service to their patients by creating a positive clinical environment and learning culture for trainees.

Mr Srinivasaiah has been practising at the trust for 15 months. His specialities are in general surgery, keyhole colorectal surgery, colorectal cancers, colorectal surgery and endoscopy.

Among his many accreditations and accomplishments is fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons. He is among the very few who have the memberships from all four Royal colleges of Great Britain – The Royal College of Surgeons of England, The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow and The Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. He is a Fellow of the European Board of Surgery, sub-specialising in coloproctology. He holds a Doctorate of Medicine (Academic surgery) for his research work on psycho-oncology and translational science, which aims to translate findings in fundamental research into medical practice and meaningful health outcomes.
