Harlow MP Robert Halfon secures further £200k to tackle homelessness in Harlow

News / Tue 26th Mar 2019 at 08:40am

ON Monday, Robert Halfon, MP for Harlow, secured a further £231,000 from the Housing Secretary, James Brokenshire MP, to tackle homelessness in Harlow.

The Housing Secretary announced the allocation of a further £46 million for the Rough Sleeping Initiative fund to support those sleeping rough and at risk in 246 local authorities across England.

This follows the £255,000 of funding for Harlow from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government in 2018 and the news in January 2019 that homelessness in Harlow has decreased by 54%.

Robert Halfon commented: “Homelessness is a serious issue in our society and needs to be tackled head-on.

“It is a very good step in the right direction from the Housing Secretary that Harlow will receive a further £231,000. While homelessness in Harlow is on the decline, we need to continue to work to solve the problem for good.

“We are fortunate to have organisations, such as The Chocolate Run and Streets2Homes, in our town and I want to thank them for the great work that they do to tackle homelessness in our community.”

Another sticking plaster from Bandwagon Bob to try to cover a wound he helped create by voting for benefit cuts and against tighter regulations on landlords. The hypocrisy of the man is colossal.

If we could do something to stop other councils moving all their homeless people to Harlow, this might be enough money to solve our own problems.

And what is wrong with benefit cuts? Broadly should only be a temporary solution and given top those who really need it, until, if possible to do so, they can get back into work. Obviously for disabilities its completely different. And as for landlords, it's their property, can do what they like with it as long as they provide a safe standard of living. But that aside, good on Robert for getting some extra money and I hope it's used not only for housing but for retraining purposes and giving support and life skills to people to help them get back to being independent. But as the article says the trend is for reduction anyway, so this can only be a good thing to help it. Although, I do agree, with the point above. Other council's shifting their problems to Harlow needs to be stopped, or followed up with a hefty bill to those councils to pay for it all.
