Grateful dad to run marathon for Princess Alexandra Hospital’s neonatal unit
A GRATEFUL parent whose baby son stayed in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at Princess Alexandra Hospital in Harlow will be fundraising for the unit when he runs the Edinburgh Marathon next Sunday, 26 May.

Darren Neesam’s son Zachary was born at the Princess Alexandra Hospital in December 2017, and after a difficult birth he was taken to neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Staff there stabilised his breathing but unfortunately he also had an infection and was on antibiotics for five days. He then had to undergo a lumbar puncture at four days old.
Darren said: “The hospital explained every step and their care was amazing. Their care was amazing.”
He added: “I now want to give something back to the amazing staff by raising money for NICU and the maternity unit for the two week’s we spent there and were cared for so that I have my wife and son with me today.”
You can read more on Darren Neesam’s Justgiving page. The 32-year-old teacher, who lives in Sawbridgeworth and works at Bishops Stortford High School, has been training hard to take part in the 26.2mile run and raise funds for the hospital. If you would like to support his effort and make a donation please visit his JustGiving page.
