Adopt a Sculpture Programme launches in schools across Harlow

HARLOW Art Trust are delighted at the response to their Adopt a Sculpture programme with Harlow schools. So far 17 schools have signed up to create projects around the sculptures closest to them.

Kate Harding Artist Director of the Harlow Art Trust said “We are inviting schools to “adopt” a Harlow sculpture as a way of encouraging civic and personal pride in our town’s unique artworks. We want schools to explore and think how they can care for the sculptures on their doorsteps. It is exciting to see all the different projects the schools are planning from drama events, photography & sculpture making.”

Kate visited Pemberley Academy on Monday to present them with their adoption certificate for Trigon by Lynn Chadwick. Earlier in the day artist and Harlow Art Trust trustee Liz Boast visited Fawbert & Barnard Primary to present them with their certificate for Kore by artist Betty Rea. It is art week for the school this week and their projects include a selfie competition by Kore.

Liz Boast said “I was impressed by how many hands went up in assembly when the children were asked if they knew the sculpture and where it was.”

The Adopt A Sculpture programme will culminate in October with a special exhibitions, an art trail around the town centre and an amazing family day as part of the international Big Draw Festival on Saturday 19 October.

Schools can still apply to adopt sculptures. It is free to take part. For more information contact Catherine Mummery [email protected]

The Adopt A Sculpture programme is part of the National Lottery Heritage funded Access to Harlow Sculpture Town project.
