Volunteers’ Green Flag Award success celebrated

A SPECIAL thank you event has been held to pay tribute to the hard work that volunteer teams put in to retain Green Flag Awards at Parndon Wood Nature Reserve and the Town Park.

A barbecue was held at the Bandstand in the Town Park on Thursday 8 August for all the volunteers who have helped the Town Park and Parndon Wood Nature Reserve retain their Green Flag status.

It is the 11th consecutive year that Parndon Wood has won the award, while the Town Park celebrates its fourth year running as a Green Flag-accredited site.

The event was attended by Councillors Frances Mason and Jean Clark, who both congratulated the volunteers on their achievements.

Councillor Mason said:

“I was delighted to attend the celebration of awards. I have huge appreciation for the contribution made by all volunteers from the Town Park, Parndon Wood Nature Reserve, Harlow Museum and the Green Team who cover a number of sites across Harlow.

“One volunteer talked of the therapeutic benefits he had gained through recovery as a volunteer in the Town Park which is very encouraging to hear.

“I also spoke with Andrew Tomlin of Harlow Conservation Volunteers who told me they work for nature conservation in and around Harlow to improve both the environment for wildlife, nature conservation to improve public access to the countryside including the Stort Valley Meadows.”

Councillor Jean Clark said:

“Town Park Education and Volunteer Officer Mike Levett enables and co-ordinates volunteers and this is appreciated by families enjoying the facilities in Harlow over recent years. Pets’ Corner offers an enduring influence on families. This has made a huge difference, all the bushes and flowers are maintained by volunteers.”
