Quiz Night boost for School Sensory Room Funds.

IN May this year, local parent Alex Sanders embarked on raising funds for a sensory room for children at William Martin Primary School. Alex, whose son has disabilities and special educational needs, has seen first-hand how challenging school can be for pupils, parents and teachers, where the resources are neither enough nor necessarily appropriate.

Alex says “At school, children are usually expected to watch and listen to the teacher in challenging spaces among the sometime conflicting demands of other pupils. A sensory room allows children who need additional support, the freedom and choice to explore the environment for themselves, in their own time, using all their senses, putting them in a better place for interaction and learning.”

Alex set herself the initial fundraising target of £5,000 and has received tremendous support from Harlow’s businesses and community. Last night, St Stephen’s Church, which has a close relationship with William Martin Primary School, played host to a Quiz Night with PCC member Ian Beckett in the Quiz Master’s chair. With over sixty people across ten teams, a fantastic array of raffle prizes, and a huge amount of generosity, the evening raised £411 breaking Alex’s total raised through the 60% mark to an amazing £3,071.

Alex said “I can’t thank everyone who helped and supported the evening enough, in particular those who came along and participated in the quiz night and those who donated prizes.” Thanks goes out to Harlow Playhouse, The Garden of India, Harlow Bowl, Nandos, London Film and Comicon, The Spurs Store, CeX Harlow, La Bellezza Within, and local Facebook businesses Babylicious Balloons, The Teeny Tiny Gift Shed, Mezmerize, and Wonderland.

Alex said “I am determined to hit my target and to go beyond it if that’s what’s needed. It’s not just about what my son needs but about how future generation of pupils at William Martin will benefit in the years to come.”
