OFFICERS will be using additional stop-and-search powers in a part of Harlow following a stabbing.

Two young men were injured following an altercation in Orchard Croft shortly after 3.15pm today (Sunday 29 March).

They were taken to hospital for treatment, their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening. Both men have been arrested on suspicion of GBH with intent.

In response officers have been authorised to use stop and search powers under Section 60 of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994.

It’s essentially an extension of the stop and search powers officers already use but differs because it means officers do not need to have reasonable grounds to stop someone.

Due to this we have an obligation to the make the public aware when one is in place, the area it covers, and how long it will be in place for.

The authority will be in place from 4.15pm today Sunday 29 March, until 6am tomorrow Monday 30 March. It covers an area that includes The Stow area, Orchard Croft, First Avenue, Momples Road, Second Avenue and Third Avenue.

Chief Superintendent Tracey Harman said: “Following the incident earlier today we are investigating what happened, protect the community, and prevent any further disturbances.

“Officers will be carrying out extra patrols with enhanced stop-and-search powers to identify and apprehend anyone carrying weapons or intent in causing harm.

“I’d like to thank the local community in advance for their co-operation.

“We continue our ongoing work to identify anyone who is intent on committing violent crime and particularly knife crime with Op Sceptre.”
