Prime Minister confirms funding for new Harlow hospital

AS part of a plan to build 40 new hospitals across the country, the Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, has confirmed the funding to build a brand new Harlow hospital.

Harlow’s MP, Robert Halfon, campaigned tirelessly to secure the new hospital with five parliamentary debates, over 40 parliamentary questions, 11 House of Commons motions, numerous letters and meetings with Ministers and a visit from the Health Secretary and the Prime Minister.

Commenting on the confirmation of the new funding, Mr Halfon said: “At the election, I promised that we would deliver a brand new Harlow hospital with more nurses and more doctors. Today’s announcement is the next step in that journey to Harlow residents seeing a brand new hospital fit for the twenty-first century.

“Our incredible NHS staff do an unbelievable job and our gratitude will never match their work, but I am delighted that they will soon have a world-class hospital to work in. The Prime Minister has pledged to fast-track the building of the new hospital and I will continue to work hard to ensure that this is done.

“PAH has already been bolstered by 170 more nurses and 53 more doctors compared with last year and is being boosted with an extra £400,000 to upgrade A&E ahead of the winter – as work on our new hospital gets underway. Strengthening our NHS is my top priority and with a new hospital, more nurses and more doctors, we are doing just that.”

Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, said: “The dedication and tireless efforts of our nurses, doctors and all healthcare workers have kept the NHS open throughout this pandemic. But no matter what this virus throws at us we are determined to build back better and deliver the biggest hospital building programme in a generation.

“From Morpeth to Milton Keynes, we are building 40 new hospitals across England to level up our NHS so more people have top-class healthcare services in their local area.”

Over the summer the Prime Minister announced £1.5 billion funding in capital funding for the NHS, including £450 million for 142 A&E upgrades ahead of winter to improve infection control and increase capacity.

This investment will be on top of the record extra £33.9 billion a year by 2023 to 2024 that the government is providing to the NHS, and passed into law this year.

Alongside work to deliver the Government’s Manifesto commitment on 40 new hospitals, progress is also being made on delivering 50,000 more nurses, with over 14,100 more working in the NHS compared to last year, as well as over 9,200 more doctors.

“… the bulk of the projects involve rebuilding or consolidation, and that only four have been started.”
“NHS Providers, which represents hospital trusts, said the real cost of building 40 new hospitals would be more like £20bn.”
It’s not “40 new hospitals across the country” – half are developments of existing sites or consolidations of other hospitals.
