Harlow Mill River Heroes win their award.

THE Green Flag awarded to Harlow Mill was the direct result of the work of a dedicated group of volunteers known as the Harlow Mill River Heroes.

They were formed following an appeal by the Canal and River Trust for local people to adopt a section of the river to look after.

The group agreed to adopt the section of the river 1km south and 1km north of Harlow Mill.

There then followed a programme of painting the lock with it’s railings and bridges, planting daffodils and wild flowers, hedge trimming and regular litter picking to keep their section of the river attractive for the many walkers, runners and cyclists who use the tow path.

The Canal and River Trust were so impressed they suggested submitting the area for the prestigious Green Flag award which has now been granted, making Harlow Mill one of the area’s prime attractions.

Convener of the group, Joanne Mills said ” This would never have happened without the hard work and dedication of the “heroes”. It’s also a wonderful example of how partnerships between the local community and official bodies can work
