A HAND-delivered goody bag delighted older members of Harlow Jewish Community when they received an unexpected knock at the door at the start of last week’s Chanukah festival.

The bag contained traditional festive foods – doughnuts, latkes (potato pancakes) and a dreidl (a four-sided spinning top).

One congregant wrote in an email of thanks: “What a lovely and very thoughtful surprise to open the door to a friendly face with Chanukah greetings and goodies from Harlow Synagogue.”

And another wrote: “Oh what a lovely gesture and wonderful surprise the card and bag of Chanukah cheer was.    With all this depressing covid misery going around Chanukah was beginning to feel like a non event, but this has certainly brought back the Chanukah spirit, so has proved to be quite priceless.

“Thank you so much for the gift, the smiles it brought, and the spirit it has lifted.”

The community held an online party on Sunday with a play and doughnut-eating competition and enjoyed a daily thought for the day from chairman Alan Cohen.

Alan said: “Chanukah is a time to celebrate and I feel that we’ve done ourselves proud. The goody bags in particular went down really well and were a lovely way to bring some happiness especially to some of our members who we don’t see so often on zoom.”
