Letter to Editor: Tories are misleading you over council tax

I was disheartened but not surprised by the recent Conservative article in Your Harlow in which Councillor Perrin attempted to deliberately mislead the Harlow electorate by stating that “Under Labour, Council Tax in Harlow has increased by £377 per year”.
Particularly as Cllr Russell Perrin knows full well that whilst overall Council Tax has increased since 2012 only a relatively small element of it is set by Harlow Council, the remainder being set by Essex County Council and the Essex Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner.
Councillor Perrin also failed to point out that over the same period the annual Government Revenue Support Grant to the Town has fallen from approx. £9 million to approx. £2.64 Million
So in 2012/13 the Band D Council Tax was £1541.43 (£251.55 was set by Labour Controlled Harlow Council and £1289.88 was set by the Conservative Controlled Essex)
In 2020/21 the Band D Council Tax was £1876.89 (£283.26 was set by Labour Controlled Harlow Council and £1593.63 was set by the Conservative Controlled Essex)
So in eight years the element of the Harlow Council Tax set by Labour has increased by £31.71p whilst the elementcontrolled by the Conservatives has increased by £303.75p
I fully expect there to be a debate about the Council Tax and Council Services but as politicians we owe it to the electorate for this to be an honest debate so that they can make an informed choice as to which party they want to elect to set the Council Tax and provide services.
