MP Robert Halfon opposes plans for European football “Super League” and calls for more support for grassroots football in Harlow

HARLOW’S MP, Robert Halfon, has made clear his opposition to the plans for a “European Super League” which would see six Premier League football teams join European giants in a breakaway competition.

The Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, condemned the move and the Culture Secretary, Oliver Dowden, set out in a House of Commons statement what steps the Government is taking to prevent such a move. He said that the Government “will do whatever it takes to protect our national game. These clubs have decided to put money before fans – so today I have been left with no choice but to formally trigger the launch of our fan-led review of football.”

Mr Halfon focussed his remarks on the potential impact on grassroots football in Harlow as he wrote to the Culture Secretary calling for more support for Harlow’s local clubs.

The letter explained that “Harlow is home to a number of fantastic football clubs” and Mr Halfon said that he had “seen first hand the amazing work that they do”. He added that “the sports sector has unfortunately been extremely hard hit by the Covid-19 pandemic and many of Harlow’s football clubs have faced significant financial difficulties”.

Commenting on his letter, Mr Halfon said: “I have deep concerns about the plan for a European Super League – particularly around the impact this would have on grassroots football in Harlow. We have many amazing local clubs and talented players, many of whom look up to the Premier League stars and enjoy watching Premier League matches.

“I have written to the Government to welcome their major investment into local grassroots football pitches and ensure that our community benefits from the money, but also to call for more support for our local teams. I will continue to work hard and do all I can to support our local grassroots clubs and teams.”
