THE leader of Harlow Council has called for a veteran Labour councillor to retract a statement that the new Tory administration have spent £26,000 on new laptops.
Cllr Andrew Johnson, Leader of Harlow Conservatives, said:
“A misleading claim was made today about the purchase of laptops by the council. It has been claimed that the new Conservative administration had spent £26,000 on new laptop equipment. This is completely untrue and any suggestion otherwise is disingenuous.
“The laptops were bought in March, well before the election, by the previous Labour administration. Cllr Mike Danvers was the Resources Portfolio holder and responsible for council spending at the time. It is disappointing that Cllr Danvers has chosen to mislead local residents and not be transparent about his actions in administration.
“The Conservative administration I lead is focused on delivering the people’s priorities, including cutting council waste to cut Council Tax. That’s why I took the decision to reduce the size of the council cabinet – because cutting the cost of politics is the right thing to do. Residents want local politicians to get on with the job of running good quality community services. The Labour Party are failing to listen to residents and are more interested in a whitewashing exercise.
“It is regrettable that Cllr Danvers has decided to make a false accusation to mask the failings of his time in office. The Labour Party should immediately withdraw the claim and issue a public apology.”
