M11 closed after large lorry fire

2200 hrs

We’re continuing to thank everyone for their patience while our colleagues in Highway England aim to reopen the M11.

Junction 9 and Junction 10 of the motorway remain closed, but our officers are working to guide traffic (unfortunately this is cars only, not HGVs) through to the Newport Gates junction so that they can continue their journey from there.

We appreciate that this has been a long evening, and we know that our colleagues in Highways are working as quickly and responsibly as possible to re-open the road.

Thank you again for your patience.

Statement from Essex Police

We’d like to thank those who are in stationary traffic on the M11 for their patience.
Officers are working to turn around cars already on the motorway where possible.

Thankfully, no one was seriously injured in the earlier lorry fire and our colleagues in ECFRS have now got the fire under control.

We have been advised that it is unlikely that the northbound carriageway will re-open before midnight.
The southbound carriageway will need additional work from our colleagues in Highways England, and is unlikely to be open before 8am tomorrow.

If you are looking to travel on the northbound carriageway later this evening or the southbound carriageway early tomorrow morning, please seek alternative routes.

CREWS have the fire under control but the road will be closed into the evening so the debris can be cleared.

Station Manager Dave Bond said: “The articulated lorry was carrying aerosol cans which exploded and scattered across both side of the carriageway. Thankfully the driver was not badly hurt.

“I must praise crews who worked extremely hard to establish a water supply in such a remote location and quickly get the incident under control.

“Unfortunately, the road will be closed for some time due to the extent of the fire.”

Crews are tackling a fire involving an HGV on the M11.

Firefighters were called to the southbound carriageway between Duxford (Junction 10) and Stansted Airport (Junction 8) today at 4.57pm and discovered an HGV completely alight.

The carriageway is closed in both directions.

Crews from Newport, Saffron Walden, Dunmow, Stansted and Hawkwell (Incident Command Vehicle) are in attendance.
