BRAND-new Wimpy Harlow has just opened its doors to eat-in dining after a return to the town by the much-loved burger brand.
The 100-seater restaurant, based in Harvey Centre Approach, has created at least 20 new jobs, and follows a major investment by joint franchisee and Essex entrepreneur Bhopinder Gill.
The former ice cream parlour has seen a major makeover to Wimpy’s latest SHIFT design which marries the brand’s strong heritage with bright new colours, bench-styleseating and Wimpy artwork on the walls.
Although Wimpy Harlow opened for delivery and takeaway in the run-up to Christmas, it is only now that diners can take a seat indoors and enjoy the traditional table service with meals served on ‘proper’ china plates with cutlery.
Bhopinder already has years of experience within the wider Wimpy family as his father was also a Wimpy franchisee. He spent his younger years waiting on tables and washing up in the kitchen and has been using his experiences to help train the new Harlow staff.
Having now invested in his first Wimpy alongside business partner Kulwant Hara, he says the feedback from customers has been very positive: “It has been fantastic, the best thing is that we’re seeing plenty of new customers who are coming to Wimpy for the first time, while we’re also saying a new hello to families who remember Wimpy when it was last in the town some 20 years ago.
“They’re now bringing their children and grandchildren and they love the modern, fresh and very chic look – it’s very exciting to see so many people coming back to Wimpy and enjoying our very special brand of warmth and welcome.”
Wimpy Harlow is open seven days a week, and among the most popular dishes are The Original Quarter Pounder Cheese and Quarter Pounder Bacon & Cheese. Catering for all tastes, Wimpy’s latest menu also includes a tasty range of meat-free options, including a juicy vegan patty in a vegan bun.
Bhopinder and Kulwant are keen to increase the number of Wimpy restaurants within Essex and Kent over the next few years and first on the agenda will be the planned opening of a new Wimpy Brentwood later this spring.
Recruitment has already begun for the 48-seater restaurant in the centre of the town’s High Street and work on refurbishing the premises, a previous retail clothing store, will begin next month.
“Wimpy is such a great brand, it has a huge and very loyal following and it taps into a feeling of nostalgia while also appealing to today’s generations with its modern approach, great value food and new menus,” said Bhopinder.
“I know that wherever new Wimpys are opening they are hugely popular, and we can’t wait to help expand the number of Wimpy restaurants across Essex and beyond.”
Chris Woolfenden, Wimpy UK general manager, said: “Bhopinder is the perfect example of the next generation of our Wimpy family of franchisees. Having effectively grown up within his father’s Wimpy, we are delighted that he and Kulwant are now investing in the brand themselves. We wish them every success, both at Harlow and Brentwood, and as further opportunities to build the Wimpy brand come along.”
