New M11 Junction 7A to open in June

Major infrastructure project to make travel in and around Harlow easier

TRAVEL in and around Harlow will soon be made easier, with the new Junction 7A due to open next month.

One of the largest road infrastructure projects in Essex for a number of years, the scheme has seen the creation of a new motorway junction, the widening of the B183 Gilden Way/Sheering Road and the installation of a new Link Road to connect the two.

Funded by Essex County Council and National Highways, works are now underway on the final elements of the works, including footpaths, kerbs, CCTV, road markings and landscaping works.

Cllr Lesley Wagland, Essex County Council’s Cabinet Member for Cabinet Member for Economic Renewal, Infrastructure and Planning, said: “I am very pleased that despite the challenges faced over the last two years, the scheme remains on schedule, with the junction to open traffic as soon as it is safe to do so.

“The new junction is critical for Harlow and the wider area. Ultimately it will help create a new east-west route through the town, helping reduce congestion, offering new public transport opportunities and further unlocking the economic potential of the area by providing more journey time reliability for businesses and improving access onto the motorway.

“This is one of a number of strategic infrastructure projects that Essex County Council is currently working on as we strive to futureproof our infrastructure and help accommodate the pressures that come with a growing population.”

Gone are the days we could quickly pop down to Mayfield farm or Churchgate Street. No right turn into Mulberry Green has put pay to that.

Jent: Mulberry Green to Mayfield Farm is 1km (1100 yards). Walk it! Or, if you must drive, then going up to the Mark Hall roundabout & back is trivial.

MARTIN: Its a pity all the selfish inconsiderate drivers who are still turning right into Mulberry green don’t think to drive up to Markhall roundabout & back down again !! Someone is going to get seriously injured or killed because of them . And you can bet it won’t be the ones who turn right !!

I have moved out of Harlow years ago, but I still think a new junction onto the moterway at church Langley would help the traffic in the whole of that area,

I cannot wait for J7a to open. Less traffic in my Potter street area and J7. Well, it cannot be good for everyone, but surely more roads - less traffic overall.

just wondering how long it will take harlow to gridlock at the first blockage on the m11

Both junction 7 and 7a funnel traffic to Mark Hall roundabout and once traffic levels return to pre pandemic levels (they promise to rise far above them because of the development of the Kao Kao science park and later when Public Health England Laboratories open etc) we'll be in super gridlock!!

Why don’t you all move and find something else to moan about….SERIOUSLY

Great to see such positive posts on here! The current situation on the M11 southbound at junction 7 is so dangerous. Cars having to queue back up the hard shoulder with vehicles hurtling by at 70+mph is frightening. It is the only solution to avoid current traffic issues and should be welcomed. I have run a business in Harlow for 25 years and it’s about time money was invested in the area.

Chris! They've spent millions over the years along the A414 and every scheme has failed, mainly because the fundamental flaws in thinking. Yes, the tailback on the M11 is an accident waiting to happen but the answer is not to keep repeating the same strategy and expecting different outcomes. We need an entirely different and radical transport plan using park and rides and free bus services plus perhaps a southern by pass or outer ring road. Anyhow, the proof of the pudding....

All these moans and groans - which are probably justified - but at the end of the day it's happened whether we like it or not. How about our hospital which has been happening for years? Need more publicity and find out what's wrong. We badly need a larger trauma hospital.

Can't wait for it to open hopefully Hastingwood and surrounding area will see the benefit and stop people using the area as a cut through and a racing track

I remember going to the local public consultation meeting and Essex County Council (ECC) were “ok” with their traffic projections of up to 35000 vehicles per day at Mark Hall roundabout. ECC & the Highways agency said they couldn’t afford to take this A414 bound traffic that mostly would want to get towards Hertford & westwards. They weren’t interested in the effects of dumping M11 traffic at Mark Hall. They appeared only to be interested in covering mistakes made by them years before when they knew the M11 should have been linked to the A414 at or near Eastwick farm dual carriageway.

Harlow is flagged as an industrial/commercial center for development in deep gov. Quality of life for residential areas are not a priority there. You are shaking fists at the wind sadly. They will never change policy while these builds generate slightly more money for a few investors.
