AT the moment Free Cakes for Kids are having a crazy influx of cakes.
Free Cakes for Kids Harlow are a group of hobby and volunteer bakers that make cakes for children who would otherwise go without due to families being in crisis. Organisations who are aware of family’s circumstances are referred, and a cake is made with love by one of the volunteer bakers and delivered free to the family.
The Harlow group was founded by Emily Cross towards the end of her maternity leave with her second child. Emily said, ‘My eldest daughter was celebrating her fourth birthday and the thing she was looking forward to most was to blow out the candles on her cake. It was at that point that I realised how important birthdays are. Finding out about the Free Cakes for Kids concept and bringing it to Harlow became something that I felt like I had to do’.
Fast forward to 2022 and the group is now ran with Chloe Rich. Chloe works as a Butterfly Volunteer Co-ordinator for PAH – Butterfly Volunteers are specially trained volunteers trained to support end of life care patients and their families. Emily now for Essex Police and is currently a PC on the Community Policing Team.
Predominately the cakes go to families referred by Harlow Foodbank and also to families being supported in domestic violence refuges. Free Cakes for Kids are looking to increase the number of organisations that refer cakes to them, as well as looking for more volunteer bakers to add to the team.
Chloe added ‘Please get in touch with us via our Facebook page if you are interested in becoming either a baker or work for an organisation that are aware of families in difficult circumstances. We would love to be able to work with Essex Social Care, Young Carer groups to name but a few.’
