Zero Tolerance: Essex Police set to get tough on e-scooters in Harlow
Crime / Thu 1st Sep 2022 at 06:49am
OFFICERS from Essex Police – Harlow District have been around the Town Centre today and over previous weeks, educating members of public who are using e-scooters around the laws.
As of Thursday 1st September 2022 officers will be taking a zero tolerance around the use of e-scooters in public areas.
So if police see you riding an e-scooter and are able to stop you on your scooter, the scooter will be seized and will deal with any other matters that arise at the time.

As I understand it, you can own and use one on your own private land or with permission of the land owner...? If I am correct it shouldn't be too difficult to eradicate these pesky, dangerous contraptions from our streets and footpaths. Hide in the bushes, wait a few minutes.
About time as well. A lot of those who use these scooter go around intimidating people who are trying to enjoy their day ut shopping or socialising with friends and family. These scooters should not even be allowed in the town centre or on the public footpath. So the police need to get on with coming down hard on these scooter users. I was rammed in my back by one of these scooter users last October.
What about those on invalidity scooters?? A friend was knocked down in Wilko's a few years ago. She needed medical assistance. She was told she should have been more careful!! My Mother-inlaw (who suffered from tunnel vision)was almost knocked down in Harvey Centre. The person was, according to a witness, steering her mobility scooter very erratically!! Should not they also be monitored or even take some kind of test??
It's not just the town centre it's cycle tracks and roads as well and should be taken from the owners no matter where they are being rode, Also we have not heard anything about the fatal involving a scooter in Westfield some months ago, No inquest report, nothing.
There has to be a better way of dealing with these scooters. Small electric vehicles and buggies are a solution to pollution and congestion, billions have been invested in accommodating cars yet no thought has been given to the future. Hggt pfp, Essex, Herts , Harlow, East Herts and Epping Councils have all pushed through massive house building programmes on the back of a "modal" shift from car journeys to walking, cycling and small electric vehicles (scooters and weatherproof buggies fall into this category) but have done nothing that will adequately provide the physical, regulatory and infrastructure that will help produce the changes that are needed. Alternatively we can get the guys carrying red flag out to walk infront of all vehicles and introduce punitive measures to literally crush progress!! As for scooters, for the moment, until the infrastructure is in place, regulate manufacturing to limit the speed and introduce registration, insurance and a requirement to have a proficiency test, (like the old Cycling Proficiency test only stronger). Lots of people simply can't afford to run cars these days ebikes, scooters and e or hydrogen buggies are a low pollution affordable way forward.
In Sumners park no motorcycles are allowed. We do get scooters and they go a fair pace in the cycle lane. More recently we've had electric bikes (built like a mountain bike). The speeds they go is terrifying. I've never seem anything go so fast in a cycle lane, definitely over 30mph. The standard of driving would not be suitable for the road let alone a cycle lane.
Just been in town and saw 2 scooters being seized. The police officer had no clue how it folded down to put in his van, also market square is empty of all the layabout drunks maybe the cost of living has got them or it’s the police presence the latter I think. GOOD JOB I say
About bloody time, maybe they due wages.
Nostradamus , To pilot an e scooter you need to be fit , if you are fit you can walk. Looking forward to seeing more crushed daily.
Bold statement considering there are no police on the streets
About time too getting fed up Wiv them whizzing past me on the pavement. No tax no insurance
I'd suggest that the E-scooters use the cycle tracks in town but they seem to be taken over by people walking dogs or jogging, I'm assuming people are not walking on the pavements because cars are parked all over them!
