Harlow athletes show great resolution at New Year meet

Athletics / Thu 5th Jan 2023 at 08:55am

BANK Holiday Monday saw Lee Valley play host to the first indoor event of 2023. The event proved as popular as ever, with athletes from as far afield as Glasgow and Newquay and Par in attendance. The format is unlike most athletic events as there are no rounds, just graded heats of mixed age competitors in sprints only. There were twenty-one heats in the 60m, fifteen in the 200m and seven for the 400m. Three Harlow athletes, Bebe Jackson, Nissi Onofowokan, and Faryl Wright took the opportunity to compete and to gauge how winter training is progressing.

Onofowokan and Jackson were in early action in the 60m events. Jackson was fourth in her heat in a time of 8.91s. Jackson went on to compete in the 200m where she was third in her heat in 30.58s. Both times were outside her best times for the distances but good early season runs with the new ankle brace she is permitted to wear in the T-44 class of para athletes.

Onofowokan, who first started competing mid-season last summer, and running indoors for the very first time, was also fourth in her race, recording a time of 8.65s. This was her only event of the day. Late in the afternoon, Faryl Wright competed in the 400m. This was unusual as U15 runners in regular age group competition run only 300m. She was the only U15 competitor on the day and was third in her heat, recording a time of 71s.

All three athletes can be satisfied with their performances and with continued hard work in training are setting themselves up for strong outdoor season times.
