Call for more sports facilities in Church Langley

Church Langley and Newhall / Tue 31st Jan 2023 at 02:27pm

Dear “Your Harlow” Readers.

REPORTEDLY, at one time, Harlow was the home of the biggest amateur network of sports participants in Europe and many of the sports clubs grew out of the many social clubs run by local manufacturing industries.

The population of Harlow continues to grow ever more rapidly, but the many community groups, clubs and facilities that supported strong social and sporting networks across all ages including young families , teenagers, youngsters, young adults and the elderly across the town have gone.

Many friendships formed then remain today: they provided a sound and resilient supportive bedrock in the town grandparents will remember The Maypole and others.

The aim of this project is to provide premises on the playing fields between Church Langley and Newhall where new sports and youth activities can be sustained and where vital networks and activities can be created or regenerated.

Demand and need outstrip provision and has done for at least 20 years.

Currently, out of two small cabins we support Frontiers Youth Football Club, senior men and womens’ football, cricket teams, maintain tennis courts, there’s the prospect of new basketball and walking football teams and or coaching this summer.

Last summer we ran a successful pilot project with Harlow Changing Lives that brought children from all over the town to the field to play a range of sports, however, due to a lack of facilities the project had to end hen autumn and winter were approaching.

Needs in our community outstrip the accommodation we have.

This can change: there is substantial funding promised towards a substantial new project and sports, youth and community pavilion but it can only be unlocked if residents are keen to support this project.

You can make a difference by completing our Community Survey today, you can make double the difference if you recruit a friend or relative to partake.

This is consultation in action: the build design will directly be affected by the returns we get.
Many thanks in anticipation:

I'm sure the good residents of Church Langley Village can ferry their children in Range Rovers to the existing sports facilities in the town.

Luke, the facilities are for the whole Eastern half of the town and villages. Currently the site is used by clubs, children and community groups from all over Harlow and they need better facilities.

I understand your frustration. The issues has'nt always been the access to funding but more how its distributed. I have seen various clubs and teams pop up and gain funding when there are perfectly good facilities and teams already in the town and then within 18 months the new clubs/teams disband. Each sport needs a town hub in my opinion

One of the founding clubs in this initiative has a strong history in the town going back to 1861 in Potter Street that makes their part of this campaign to get a decent pavilion 162 years long. Our Football history goes back to 1918, and same issue, despite the now junior football club being the largest in the town. This an opportunity not only for sports but to develop much a needed youth club / support and community provision.

I thought villagers preferred tug-o-war, horseshoes or dancing round a maypole?
