Upper Park residents upset at loss of much-valued postman

Business / Fri 3rd Feb 2023 am28 08:19am

UPPER Park residents have written to Post Office bosses, dismayed at the loss of their postman.

The letter states:

Dear Sirs.

We are writing to you as a community to let you know how upset and angry we are that we are about to lose our regular postman.

Simon, who is not just our postman but a trusted friend and carer of his delivery patch, is greatly valued by all of us. He goes over and above his post office duties with no detrimental effect to the job, by helping the elderly, noticing when things are not right and recently, being a big help to the police in a murder investigation.

Simon has built up relationships on his round and delivers an excellent service.  He goes out of his way to make sure packages are left and not sent back to the delivery office, which can cause problems for the customer and extra work for your very busy collection office.

This is totally unfair to him – and other postmen who have delivered to a regular area for many years – to change his daily routine, which he enjoys, for what reason?! Can you explain why this is happening because we can see no logic to changing what works well.

We want to keep Simon as our postman and will be doing all we can to make this happen.

We have contacted Your Harlow about this matter.

From the very grateful

Residents of Upper Park, Harlow

Totally support what you are saying. Our postman (Bob) is much more than just a letter delivery person. Unfortunately it is probably too late to stop this change. I understand similar changes were tried before and were a bit of a disaster. The Post Office had to change back to how they were before. We can but hope.

Unfortunately Royal Mail are nowa p rivate company the service having been privatised under the Tory/Liberal coalition in 2013. Following the Postal Services Act 2011, a majority of the shares in Royal Mail were floated on the London Stock Exchange in 2013. The UK government initially retained a 30% stake in Royal Mail, but sold its remaining shares in 2015, ending 499 years of state ownership.

The postie that serves my area in Sumners Farm is a diamond geezer who delivers the mail in rain or shine and has a smile on his face. A total shame that the Royal Mail was privatised. If my experience of privatisation of Post Office Telecoms is anything to go by, Royal Mail is going to get worse due to the greed if the bosses and City slicker shareholders.

As genuine as they come, a real shame if he goes.

Most posties when on a regular delivery will always go out of their way to help the local community. This personal contact with people is sadly lacking in many industries now and needs to be revived as part of the job description .

Delivering letters in unprofitable. Royal Mail are aiming to just deliver parcels.

I worked for a large European Post Office in the years when while most Postal Service Operators had been privatised, the Royal Mail remained State Owned - We took a look at Royal Mail then and saw the UK Domestic Operations as a basket case that we wouldn't bid for if it came to market. State Owned Royal Mail suffered from underinvestment, restrictive practices and poor management. I've never supported privatisation of utilities, but Royal Mail may have been better placed in today's marketplace had it been privatised at the same time as its peers.

Sandra I have nothing but praise for my postman, l live in Ryecroft and he has been our postman for over 25 year, I find him to be kind and professional and went far beyond his duty to help me on the occasion of my husband's funeral for which I will be eternally greatful.
