HARLOW Town kicked off their delayed league season with a six-wicket victory against a resilient Barking side.

With skipper Ronnie Yates winning the toss the Town bowlers bowled aggressively showing impressive control of line and length strangling the scoring ability of the visiting opening batters. Sam Wilson (2-23) dismissed both openers via LBW and an impressive caught and bowled respectively. With the batsman looking set, even though they were not scoring that quickly, Yates bought Nabeel Akhtar (1-34) and Ausman Ginai in to the attack, both continuing to heap pressure on the batters, Ginai cleaned out Barkings middle order finishing with impressive figures of 4-31. Yates dismissed 3 of the lower order to finish with figures of 3-32. Barking finished on a competitive 157 all out, courtesy of a fantastic 81 not out from Eman Shaikh.

In reply Town found going hard with Shiraz Ali falling early for 3. Dan Baldwin (17) and Darryl Pettengell (28) steadied the ship, but Town soon lost both along with Ben Tyne (0) and Town were wobbling at 63-4. Pat Yates and Shaun Alderson stepped up to steady the ship and quietened the excited fielders. Once they saw off the dangerous spin of Abdul Razzaq they took control and scored freely from the pace bowlers eventually finishing with a partnership of 95, with Shaun finishing on 30 not out and Pat 47 not out.

The 2nd XI suffered a 37 run defeat away to Woodford Green, fielding first captain Tom Wilcox and his team got off to a great start with the home team on the ropes at 34-3, they couldn’t however press on the advantage and a couple of big knocks from the middle order saw Woodford Green finish on 191-7. Town’s reply from Aaron Simpson (43) and Joe Spiers (49 not out) was a great start, however only one other batter made double figures as Town slumped to 154 all out.

The 3rd XI were handed a heavy defeat at home against Essendon who eventually won by 170 runs. Town fielded first and were made to pay as Mr Akbar scored a 143 not out, as Essendon reached 244/7, Town wickets were taken by Calvin Quadir (4-35) and Ali Zafar (2-44). Town had to chase at a rather high 6 an over, which considering the conditions may as well have been 12 an over, and wickets fell at regular intervals with Town struggling to 74 all out.

This week the first XI travel to Ardleigh Green whilst the 2nd XI host Old Southendians, and the 3rd XI hosting High Roding.
