Ukraine war: Road in Harlow renamed after President Zelenskyy

History / Thu 25th May 2023 at 06:44am

A ROAD in Harlow has been renamed after the inspirational President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Fifth/Allende Avenue, which is a busy main road in the town and runs along Harlow Town Park and towards Eastwick in Hertfordshire, has been officially renamed Fifth Avenue – Zelenskyy Avenue

New road signs will be installed by Harlow Council in the coming weeks and His Excellency Vadym Prystaiko, Ukraine’s ambassador to the UK has been invited to their unveiling.

The renaming follows Harlow Council agreeing a motion last year outlining its support for Ukraine and Ukrainian people in their fight to maintain democracy and self-determination as a nation. The motion included renaming Fifth/Allende Avenue in honour of the Ukrainian president. Following consultation, the road has officially been renamed.

Councillor Russell Perrin, Leader of Harlow Council, said: “This road renaming is about us recognising the inspirational leadership of Volodymyr Zelenskyy and showing the town’s support for Ukraine and Ukrainians who are living in our town after fleeing Putin’s war.

“Renaming the road is just one of many ways that the town has shown its support for Ukraine and Ukrainians. This support includes our residents opening their hearts and doors to helping Ukrainian families through the government’s Homes for Ukraine scheme and running a donation point for residents and businesses to donate humanitarian aid. This busy main road which leads in and out of Harlow will be a legacy to the inspirational efforts of both Ukraine’s president and Ukrainian people.”

Clearly someone thinks spending our money on this is a higher priority than fixing roads/pavements/council house/social care/cost of living/ cutting grass etc. Please let us know who decided this so we know who not to vote for at next election. This is also a good example of why a lot of people did not vote at the last election as it clearly shows how out of touch our politicians are with the wider public.

While the people struggle to pay bills and feed their family's, tories are brainstorming ideas like this. We have to get these people out!

Surprised that the council persist in using the road names locals do not refer to them by. Replacing one democratically elected leader for another as the individual does not fit 'the right type' for the local council is interesting. Good thing that Mandela Avenue was not up for consideration when he was not flavour of the month back in the day. Maybe the local council should have gone with Pinochet Avenue.

"Pandora Papers Reveal Offshore Holdings of Ukrainian President and his Inner Circle" "Zelenskyy bans largest opposition party" "Zelenskyy launches crackdown against Ukrainian Orthodox Church" Be a corrupt politician, get a road named after you in Harlow. Maybe if the council charge for such services, the budget would look a little healthier.

Waste of money and a totally stupid idea as it certainly won't help Ukraine to win the war!

Oh that's brilliant. Well done! Looking at Google maps we may be the first town to adopt that name. Something to be proud of - showing respect to our town's diversity, support to Ukraine, and providing role-models for our younger generations.

I understand that once the roadworks are complete on Fifth Avenue and the new are trees planted, it will be renamed 'Farage Boulevard'.

Just realised my mistake. Apparently I believe it was renamed as all the potholes made it look like a war zone.

Not sure this got the reaction the muppets on the council wanted. Frankly they should be ashamed and focus on delivery not things like this which is a distraction.

More of this please!! The UK stands with Ukraine and the world against terrorism, in more than just words and money! What's not to love?! Slava Ukraini!

Ha "Zelenskyy launches crackdown against Ukrainian Orthodox Church" That's because the "Ukrainian" Orthodox Church is a corrupt ruSSian lead "church".. less of a church and more of a spy agency... they have no right to be in Ukraine just like the ruSSian nazi army. The rightful, and flourishing church in Ukraine is the Orthodox Church of Ukraine. This war ends the moment ruSSia go home, moan at them... not Ukraine or the UK for their support. We are a rich nation should and can afford both... to fix our roads, support our needy and support the global community against terrorism..!! And we should be proud of it!! I cannot believe how many people the Conservatives have fooled!! Makes me ashamed to be British, our amazing country used to have morals... where did they do? The Enemy Doesn't Arrive by Boat He Arrives by Limousine!!! Eat the Rich!

Brilliant comments, something decided upon last year but announced shortly after the local elections. As someone asked, is this a good use of our money?

Chris

I didn't see any consultation on this being made public to let the people of the town decide? I would have appealed for sure! Another "working together for Harlow" surely the slogan needs changing "we decide what Harlow needs, not the people"

Peter, yes this is a great use of our money, and we have plenty to go around… you’ve being brainwashed by the Tories to think we are a poor country so they can continue to steal all the money and line their pocket. We have plenty to go round, enough to fix our country and to continue to stand up to terrorism. You should be proud to be from a country with morals not moaning about it! And Chris why would it need public consultation? The majority of the country and world have morals and support Ukraine, therefore the majority of Harlow would be in favour no?

Oh yeah that's going to do it, now Russia know the big H town is with Ukraine no doubt they will surrender........ I am with RayMo when we getting Churchill way or Garnet Gardens

Geta Life
2023-05-25 15:50:31

It is not about that, or even for that..derrr! Of course it isn't going to make them surrender... LOLLLL that was never the reason ha but we can still show support via it? Show we are on the right side of history, show we care and support Ukraine with more than just words, arms, and money. It all counts. Far too many Nazi sympathizers here jezz. And I totally agree with a Churchill way, you have my vote!! But that is a different argument... you don't get something by taking it away from something else. Should just push you to campaign for a Churchill way, but that would be too much hard work? Easier just to be a troll on the internet. (Y)

Geta Life trolling at it's finest hahahahaha take a leaf out your own book What is the point of it? Naming a pothole ridden street after someone that's nothing to do with Harlow doesn't make sense, maybe they should have dedicated filling a pothole to Ukraine everyone wins then!

We can only Dream
2023-05-25 16:11:41

"they should have dedicated filling a pothole to Ukraine" Now that's the dream! herehere. But all of the above! We have many roads to use for a Churchill way, Boris Boulevard and the Zelenskyy Avenue and even more potholes to fill!!! Russia will be no more by the end of the week - can only dream!

It seems that now the criteria for getting a road named after you in Harlow is to be the victim of an illegal invasion. Can't wait for First Avenue to be renamed Saddam Way.

Harlow council has decided on behalf of the people of Harlow that we want the name of a puppet president presiding over a manufactured war is what ordinary people want? Honestly cannot believe what I'm reading

It’s all just a huge joke now. Surely everyone can see this by now. We the people of Harlow didn’t vote for this. We need to celebrate people of peace not war! He’s a war mongering puppet who is an actor- yes an actor not a politician ! It’s just laughable now. Nobody cares anymore .

I'm loving the comments in this article. Full of understanding, love and support. Absolutely no division here whatsoever. Oh wait... no. I was wrong. Am I shocked at these comments? Nope. Because it once again shows just how xenophobic the people of Harlow can be. A foreign name on a sign? Heaven forbid! And to those saying "But what about our great leaders..." really? Like we don't have a million street names after Churchill, Elisabeth, Edward - Heck, we even have Thatcher for street names. And you lot are that upset because someone named a street after Zelenskyy? Come on. How about one of you - JUST ONE - present a valid argument for reasons why this shouldn't be done? Show one real reason why or how this harms anyone. Your ego doesn't count.
