Henry Moore School flies the flag for Harlow at National Schools Football Finals

Education / Fri 9th Jun 2023 at 01:23pm

WEDNESDAY June 7th was a historic day for the children of The Henry Moore Primary School Year 5/6 football team, as they travelled to Leicester to compete in the Football Associations Primary Schools National Football Finals.

Their journey began back in the autumn term of 2022 when the team consisting of Jesse, Mason, Sonny, Bobby, Dylan, Daniel, Kai, Harry, Casey and Freddie represented their school to win the Harlow Schools Cup.

During the winter they then travelled to Chelmsford to compete in the Essex County Cup, where they were once again winners.

As a result, during the Spring of 2023, they were tasked with representing Essex in the South-East Regional Schools Final at Thamesmead sports complex in Kent.

After an incredibly tough day of football, Henry Moore were crowned the Champions of the South East of England… but their journey didn’t end there!

The team were invited by the FA to play at Leicester City’s King Power Stadium for the football finals against eight teams, each a champion in representing a different region of the country.

It was an incredible day for the children, who got to play on the Leicester City pitch with all of their family and friends in the stadium cheering them on. On the day, the team Won 1, Drew 1 and Lost 1 with goals from Dylan, Mason and Freddie.

The matches were all streamed live with commentary by the FA on YouTube so the rest of the school, in Harlow were able to watch and cheer them on.

The team were narrowly pipped by 1 point to playing in the knockout finals.

Overall, the team finished in 5th place, an incredible achievement considering there are 17,000 primary schools in England!

Mr Leverington, Mr Tyrrell and Mrs Broughton are very proud coaches! The children represented themselves and the school impeccably at the event and played some fantastic football.

This is an incredible achievement for the team, the teachers and all staff at Henry Moore Primary School and has created a memory of a lifetime for the children.

Congratulations to the team, the coaches and supporters. This day will stay with them for the rest of their days. Jumpers for goalposts and a few meters of grass is all that’s needed for children to develop social and cognitive skills. Let’s hope investment in our teachers and sport grows No more having to sell off playing fields to buy school essentials. I shall be looking forward to MOTD in 10 years time to see if any of these names come up. YH will no doubt be tracking their progress for us avid readers. I wonder how many readers played against Glenn Hoddle :)
