Athletics: Running sensation George equals Harlow AC record that has stood for over fifty years!

Athletics / Fri 18th Aug 2023 at 05:20pm

HARLOW Athletic Club’s rising star, George Watkins has just equalled a club record that has stood for close to fifty years.

On Wednesday August 9th at an Open Graded Meeting in Watford, the 13-year-old St Mark’s student ran 9.02.4 for the 3,000 metres.

He has equalled the record set in 1970 by running prodigy Richard Green.

The performance puts George seventh in the UK rankings. However, he still has another full year in the Under-15 category as he is only 14 next month.

To let you know how good Richard Green was, his 1500 metre record for that age (4.06) is the same time that Olympic 10,000 metre gold medallist Mo Farah achieved at that age.

George also came 17th in the All England Cross Country Championships (sixth in his age group).

Anyone who does the Harlow parkrun will recognise George as he flies around the 5k course in close to 17 minutes. And he runs there and back with his proud and dedicated father cycling behind him.

George is in good hands down at the track in the grounds at Mark Hall.

Harlow AC are ambitious for all their athletes but they want them to enjoy their running both now and for years to come.

Next year could be a fantastic year for George. On behalf of all the running community, we wish George all the best.
