CHELMSFORD’S six-race Wednesday meeting: preview and tips as top-jockey Oisin Murphy heads to Essex.

The all-weather season continues apace at Chelmsford with two meetings this week at the Essex track – the first of them arriving on Thursday.

A six-race card is on offer for punters in midweek, getting underway at 6.00 under the lights at Chelmsford before rounding off at 8.30pm.

Up first is a restricted maiden stakes at 6.00 and five runners are entered for the 5f sprint contest. Cervaro Della Sala is the pick in the opener, but only just, having finished a credible enough third of six in a Wolverhampton maiden and has top jockey Oisin Murphy on board here after a 142-day absence from the track.

Race two (6.30) sees 11 runners take on the class six handicap over the 5f trip and course winner Tilsworth Ony Ta has a big claim to bounce back to winning ways, having scored at Chelmsford in January. Another course and distance winner in Josies Kid is back at Chelmsford, while View From The Stars also is of interest off a very enticing looking weight despite having yet to get off the mark.

The third race of the evening (7.00) is a very competitive contest in class six, with Piper’s Force having been upped just 1lb in the weights after a fine second at Lingfield last time out and is the selection to go one better at Chelmsford. The chief threat is likely to come from Dame Darcey, who was a solid one and a half length third to another of the runners in this race, Stacey Racey.

Eight runners will head to the start for race four of the evening (7.30) and top jockey Murphy gets the ride on the Andrew Balding-trained Aztec Empire, who won twice on the all-weather last season and was only a neck second in a high-profile handicap at York’s Ebor meeting last August.

Up next, and the penultimate race of the card, is the maiden fillies’ stakes over 7f at 8.00 and the pick of the five runners goes to So Logical, a Newmarket runner up last October who is taken to improve for that run here. It is worth keeping an eye on the market for the Jane Chappel-Hyam trained Aquacell, a well-bred £300,000 yearling who wears a hood on racecourse debut.

Finally, the card comes to a close with the class six handicap over the 2m trip at 8.30 and the selection here is for Daaris, who stayed on well for a second place finish at Wolverhampton when last seen and is stepping up in trip here, which is what he needs judging by his last outing.
