UNPAID carers must repay more than £250 million after many were unknowingly overpaid their allowance, new figures show reports the BBC.

The government is seeking to recover money from more than 134,000 carers.

Carer’s Allowance must be repaid in full if a strict earnings limit is exceeded by even a few pence.

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) said it was “progressing an enhanced notification strategy” to alert carers to overpayments.

The government should write the debts off. Carers are saving the NHS a fortune.

Agree Eddie, 100%. These people do a very very tough job, often putting their own lives on hold too while they care. The same gov ignore all the PPE contracts which cost billions to us taxpayers when we got nothing in return, as well as other massive waste of our money. Make it make sense...

Agee Eddie and Trace, this is an issue entirely of the DWP’s making. From not communicating to carers about their allowance overpayments in a timely manner, to knowingly allowing them to rack up high levels of debt. The Liberal Democrats have called for this debt to be cancelled. This not only recognizes that it’s the Government which is at fault, but also that the carers are saving us (you, me and every other tax payer) millions of pounds a year by caring for their loved ones. As your LibDem MP, I shall hold any future Government to account and ensure this debt is cancelled; so no carer in Harlow will have to pay money back because of DWP’s failure.

This is an absolute disgrace!! Earn just £1 over the allowance limit & your benefit is stopped!! People who recieved an hourly wage increase have inadvertently gone over the allowed earning allowance & been penalised!! Shame on you Rishi!! Crucifying & penalising the very people who are saving the NHS millions!!!
