THE latest race meeting at Chelmsford arrives on Thursday evening with a competitive eight-race card on offer for punters heading to the track.

Racing gets underway at the Essex track at 5.15 on Thursday evening with a 12-runner maiden stakes in division one of class five before rounding off at 8.45 with a class six handicap over the seven furlong trip.

The division one opener (5.15) sees 12 horses head to the stalls to get the action underway over the six furlong distance. The John Butler-trained Number is taken to open his winning account here having performed well in two prior runs and has top jockey Oisin Murphy on-board for a bit of extra assistance at Chelmsford. Of his rivals, debutant Glitterati commands respect for the Archie Watson team, who have a good record with newcomers.

Race two (5.45) is in division two of class five over six furlongs and preference is for Brian, a two-year-old who shaped well when fourth in a Windsor maiden 17 days ago and has more to come. Cool Hoof Luke for the in-form Andrew Balding yard rates as the main danger on debut, coming from a well-fancied yard in this sphere.

Thirteen runners will take on the 1m6f trip in the class six handicap for race three on the card (6.15) and is a tough one to unpick with slight preference for Nivelle’s Magic, not seen to best effect last time out and is stepping up in distance here for trainer Simon Earle. Course winner Further Measure is the biggest threat, without a win in 17 runs but was a good second in a Chelmsford handicap last time out.

A smaller field of six tackle the class five handicap at 6.45 with preference for Marefuori, trained by Marco botti and with pilot Murphy on board, dropping down in class after a fifth of seven at this track last time out on May 9 while in race five (7.15), Ten Dimes looks to be the one to beat for the John and Thady Gosden team, a winner of a Newcastle maiden last time out but the powerhouse Godolphin team can put up a big challenge with Precious Jewel, winner of the Darley Fillies’ Stakes at Newmarket on her last spin.

Endless Power and Wadacre Gomez appear to be fighting out race six (7.45) between them in the 1m2f handicap, with slight preference for the latter, switching back to his preferred all-weather surfacer after a spin on the turf at Chester but finishing towards the back of the pack.

The penultimate race of Chelsmford’s Thursday card sees seven runners head down to the start for the class three handicap over the 1m2f distance at 8.15 and preference is for Divine Breath, trained by Ralph Beckett, a winner at Wolverhampton two starts back and a good six of 12 in a Newmarket handicap when last seen on May 17.

Finally, the card comes to a close at 8.45 as teen runners tackle the class six handicap over seven furlongs. Salamaat holds very strong claims having improved when second of nine in a Wolverhampton handicap last time around but that form has been boosted with the winner scoring again after.
