Armed Forces Day 2024: Arriva Essex’s former Navy man rallies behind free travel for the military

Events / Thu 27th Jun 2024 at 07:29am

BUS operator Arriva is once again offering free travel for military and ex-military personnel on Armed Forces Day.

The day, Saturday, June 29, is a chance for the public to show support for the men and women who make up the Armed Forces community: from serving troops to service families, veterans and cadets.

The commitment to free travel for the Armed Forces is supported by the many Arriva employees who have served in the military in the past.

One of those is Scott Hayward, who used to be in the Royal Navy, but is sites manager for Arriva at Southend and Colchester.

Scott is responsible for getting vehicles and drivers out on time.

Scott, 58, served for 24 years and completed tours of duty in the Falkland Islands (post-conflict) and in the Persian Gulf, where he was involved in anti-piracy, disaster-relief and peacekeeping tours.

He said it means a lot to him that Arriva supports Armed Forces Day because it means a lot to the communities the bus operator serves.

He said: “By supporting Armed Forces Day, Arriva is not only showing its gratitude for the armed forces but also promoting a sense of community and support for those who have served as well as their families and the wider community.

“This can in turn build staff morale and reinforce relationships within the community.

“I enjoyed my job in the Royal Navy as I liked travelling the world, making a difference, passing on my knowledge as an instructor to new sailors and reacting and adapting to rapidly changing situations.

“Operations is my background and my job at Arriva is very similar – it’s just a different platform and for different outcomes.

A number of towns and cities across the country are hosting events on Saturday.

Serving military personnel (both regular and reservists) veterans and cadets will be allowed free travel on Arriva services all day on Armed Forces Day.

When boarding the bus, they will need to show the driver their Armed Forces identification card, Veteran identification card or Ministry of Defence-issued Veteran’s Badge.
