Harlow Labour demand urgent meeting and ask: “Why can the Tories not keep a Chief Executive”
News / Thu 3rd Oct 2024 at 05:11pm

THE LEADER of Harlow Labour has expressed his deep concern over the number of chief executives that have come and gone at Harlow Council since the Tories came to power in 2021.
Councillor James Griggs said: “Why can the Tories not keep a Chief Exec?

“With the sudden and unexpected departure of Yvonne Rees Harlow Council is yet again seeking a Chief Executive. Cllr Swords explain action of ‘an interim contract has come to an end’ has no credibility. You plan for such a thing, this is an unexplained and immediate departure.
The Tories have now seen off four in a little over three years.
“Is this Tory administration that difficult to work with? Why can they not hold on to senior staff?
Ms Rees brought in another interim to effectively be her deputy, he’s gone with her today.
The senior management team has been decimated under the watch of the Harlow Tories.
Just a couple of weeks ago I asked Ms Rees when we would be starting the recruitment of her replacement and she showed no signs of intending to leave any time soon. So, did she jump or was she pushed?
“I hope that we will urgently start the process of recruiting a permanent Chief Exec, something I’ve been seeking for some time.
I have today written to the Chair of the Council and requested an emergency meeting of the council to allow councillors to discuss this chaotic situation.
“To misquote Oscars Wildes infamous Lady Bracknell, ‘to lose one chief exec may be considered unfortunate, to lose four looks like carelessness.’
“Chaotic carelessness I’d say!”
They were correct in getting rid of this one
I never met the lady, but high staff turnover is usually symptomatic of bad management. Who is the responsible person within our elected council, is it down to a committee or an individual, Dan or Andrew perhaps. Or perhaps changing leaders is what tories do best. Happy to take over for a while, I have never been in such a role in a public body so perhaps that will help.
Let me set out a scenario: The council under the leadership of an ambitious young councillor promises to make Harlow great again. Insists on buying things like the Harvey Centre, Burnt Mills housing, and knocking down buildings and tells the CEO to find the funds to pay for it. They can't because it would mean gutting the core of valued and needed council services. They resign because the very stench of failure will damage their future career options. Am I getting warm?
Finally, Harlow Labour has woken up and smelt the coffee and asked a TIMELY and PERTINENT question. Whilst they wait, probably a long time, for an answer, perhaps they could say what they would do different and how they would pay for it? Until they can demonstrate a viable and and affordable alternative to Harlow's lacklustre and calamitous Tory Council, Labour are destined to remain in opposition.
Gary Roberts is probably part correct, but me thinks awkward questions are looming about fire risk assessments, including whether they are as poor as the ones highlighted in the Grenfell Tower Inquiry.
Tory team: "all fur coat....!" Labour team probably need new glasses. Coming out of the EU has meant that government is spending more, throwing money away on nuclear power plants that cost at least five times more than green alternatives and being pushed to spend 3% of GDP on defence: local Councils are generally massively underfunded yet Harlow is spending on projects to grow Harlow into a mini city rather than improving the quality of services and life for the residents.
Have Labour had their meeting with Dan Swords? I feel it should be urgently investigated wether he has crossed the line at the council and breached any law, guidance or procedures, he currently has no one to hold him to account.

It might be because He arlow now has another Labour MP.
It might be because Harlow has another Labour MP.
To lose so many able and qualified people within such a short time period indicates there is clearly rot within Harlow Council. Financial scandal and maybe more will emerge soon.
One wonders how they can legally hold a by election withtout a returning officer……
