Epping students set to take to the stage

Education: Secondary / Mon 9th Dec 2024 at 11:26am

STUDENTS at Epping St John’s School will be taking to the stage for two performances of their winter production.

The school’s Drama Club is staging a re-visitation of the popular brothers Grimm’s fairy tales ‘Epping Forest Fables’.

The siblings Hansel and Gretel find themselves abandoned in a mysterious forest falling into the hands of the witch who lives in a house made of cake and sugar.

How will they save themselves from her cruel intentions in this thrilling adventure?

They will meet a lot of other characters on the way; some you’ll know and some you won’t…

The production is co-written and directed by the Drama Club students, with the guidance of Head of Performing Arts Craig Hall and drama teacher Joe Whitbread.

The school choir, ESJ Voices, directed by music teacher Dave Collington-Davis will introduce the performances with a repertoire of popular Christmas carols.

The artwork for the show’s poster has been created by Year 10 student Lowri Phillips.

There are two performances, in the main hall, on Tuesday, December 17, at 5pm and 7pm.

Assistant headteacher Arianna Macherin said: “The ESJ Drama Club has grown year after year thanks to the extraordinary dedication and passion infused by the teachers in the Performing Arts department.

“This is the third year in which the students are actively involved in readapting the script of a well known play.

“The co-writing and directing practice has given students a new ownership of their skills.

“It is so great to see students so involved in the play, from the set design to the costumes and make-up, music, lights, directing and acting.

“This is an invaluable experience that brings the drama school community together and one that they will never forget!”

Tickets can be reserved on Parent Pay – £5 adults (children free).
