Roadside clearance works set for Fifth Avenue

ROADSIDE clearance works that will allow for upgrades and improvements to Fifth Avenue – Zelenskyy Avenue are underway on the Hertfordshire side of the River Stort.
The works, taking place over January and February to avoid peak bird nesting season, will involve the removal of overgrown roadside shrub and ground vegetation.

Any trees included in the clearance, or in danger of collapse due to age or condition, will be replaced as part of a major replanting scheme which will see over 850 new trees by the time the highway works are completed.
This phase will enable the section of Fifth Avenue – Zelenskyy Avenue, between Burnt Mill and Eastwick roundabouts, to be rebuilt to accommodate Harlow & Gilston Garden Town’s new bus, walking and cycling routes in both directions alongside a redesigned highway for vehicles. It is anticipated that the works will move to the Essex section of Fifth Avenue – Zelenskyy Avenue from next month.
The aim is to keep delays and congestion to a minimum but short-term temporary traffic measures are on standby should the works encroach onto the existing highway.
This is the second phase of the highway works that are currently on site and being constructed between Harlow Town Centre and Burnt Mill roundabout.
The multimillion pound investment into Harlow will connect Gilston’s seven new Garden Town villages with Harlow town centre via the redesigned Fifth Avenue – Zelenskyy Avenue. Speaking about the works, Harlow Council’s portfolio holder for Garden Town and Planning, Cllr Alastair Gunn, said: “These road works are essential if we’re to deliver on our promise of improving Harlow’s public transport, cycling and walking network, providing us all with travel options that are safe, affordable and accessible. “This is vital if we’re to limit congestion on our roads in future.
Make the road from gilston roundabout up to sainsburys a dual carrigway, great that new buses coming this way, but people won't give up their cars! Burtmull roundabout could also be a hamburger roundabout to make movement easier...
Yes I agree with J, make the train station a hamburger roundabout, and move the bus stop going down towards the A414, to stop congestion, cause when a bus stops there you can't go past because of oncoming traffic.
Another monster traffic jam about to happen. Clearly the planners show no regard to the car drivers who have to negotiate their follies every day
Like the trees Essex planted on the new motorway junction? - Planted in the summer and 90% died in the first year - They just mow around the dead sticks now - Someone made some money I guess
My company, after about 50 years in the town, is about to give up on the place because of the ever worsening traffic. Looks like we’ll be moving to one of those factories that farmers are building everywhere. Guess we’ll miss Greggs, but not much else - That’ll be another 25 skilled jobs gone from the town - Probably it will be replaced by another Happy Clappy church.
It's going to do nothing to stop traffic be exactly the same or worse
THIS ARTICLE BY CLLR GUNN IS MISINFORMATION. I went to the planning meetings that were held in East Herts and Harlow. The Highway Officers that gave evidence were quite clear that that the roadworks have NOT been designed to reduce congestion! On the contrary; he said that when the existing roundabout is replaced with Crossroads with traffic lights it would cause additional congestion, especially in peek periods and would give priority to the bus lane that is currently being built for the benefit of the residents of Hggt Harlow North. Additionally it is planned that no through traffic will be allowed on the High wych road towards Sawbridgeworth and will instead be diverted through Harlow over the planned Eastern River Stort Crossing onto River way. This is why they they built the new Exit on Harlow Road in Old Harlow in such a hurry! I really wish our council would stop treating us as fools!
This stretch of road should be duelled, and the station roundabout made into a 'hamburger' system, to help traffic flow. This would negate the 'need' to destroy the Story Valley with another road crossing. Removing the roundabout entirely is bonkers, and a recipe to maximise congestion. Hint: finish a couple of projects before starting new works. It might reduce Harlow's chaos a bit.
Tony is voicing what is very clear, the current and future roadworks are persuading business to leave the town and reducing trade to retailers. Elephant is exactly correct the whole strategy that'll bisect and ruin the natural nature reserve formed by the River Stort Valley with a culverted raised road called The Eastern Crossing is to force traffic into east Harlow to River Way and the M11. Reports and comments online back up that people are avoiding Harlow like the plague. The East West and North South cross main route sustainable corridors plan is unsustainable and a design that'll increase congestion, it's obvious planners have no knowledge of AI road design modelling software and clearly haven't looked at the fate of similar systems employed elsewhere. Harlow is on a road to ruin!
I at times walk my dog along the road past the old swimming pool to that runs between the Stow and Town, the roadworks have been in place for ages, and I struggle to see ANY difference to the road.... Thankfully walking we don't get stuck in all the traffic congestion on roads heading into the town center.... The temporary bus station seems to work, but why has nothing been done with the terminus street one, it will not transform on its own....when will work begin
