The reality of prison life: the prison officer opens your cell door and across the landing you see a fellow prisoner hanging from the bars. You go the sluice to empty your potty and see someone has had their head bashed in. At dinner time you watch the line of inmates queue up for the liquid cosh issued by prison staff. You see three inmates advancing towards your cell door looking to commit GBH with intent on your cellmate, but you make a stand and risk getting a bashing. You keep one eye over your shoulder every time you go to the showers. You share a cell with a murderer and you wonder whether while you sleep that you will become his next victim. Every new prisoner is seen as easy prey for bullying. The sensible solution is stay out of trouble, don't join a gang and don't carry a knife.
