HARLOW’S Essex League Cup campaign began with a spirited showing against Newham CC at Flanders Field. There were plenty of positives for the season ahead but unfortunately it ended in a five-wicket defeat.
The drama started before a ball was bowled, with skipper Tom Garner ruled out after a freak injury celebrating Mateta’s late winner in a PL dead rubber against Arsenal. Ronnie Fuller and Andre Riddell stepped in to share the captaincy in the teams first competitive outing of the year.

Batting first after losing the toss, Harlow made a rocky start, slipping to 18-3 inside the first few overs. However, a fantastic fightback followed.
20-year-old Australian David Waters, making his debut after only arriving this week, played with composure and power to top-score with a superb 73 runs.
George Jessey (31) and Gull Hassan (18) also made vital contributions as Harlow rebuilt from early trouble to post 188 all out from 43.5 overs with the former playing in his first competitive 1st XI fixture.
In the field, Harlow came out full of energy and purpose. Joe Riddell struck early to claim the first wicket, and from there, the spinners took charge of the middle overs.
George Jessey bowled cleverly, switching between off-spin to left-handers and leg-spin to right-handers, while Rhys Stewart offered excellent support, keeping it tight at the other end. Newham looked in control of the chase but both spinners made sure the game never stayed out of reach.
David Waters capped his outstanding debut with a disciplined 2-33 from his 9 overs, applying pressure and giving Harlow real control through key stages of the innings.
Newham’s batters struggled for rhythm at times, with many of their runs coming through hacks, edges, and slices rather than anything convincing.
Harlow created opportunities, with several half-chances flashing just wide or falling just short which on another day, a few more catches could easily have changed the outcome.
Despite a determined bowling effort, Newham eventually got over the line, finishing 192-5 in 35.1 overs.
While the result didn’t fall Harlow’s way, the spirit, energy, and performances, particularly from the younger players, were a huge positive.
David Waters made an immediate impact, George Jessey showed real maturity with both bat and ball, and the resilience shown after early setbacks bodes extremely well for the summer ahead.
Although Harlow narrowly missed out on a chance to face Premier Division side Wanstead in the next round, the squad can take huge pride in their efforts.
Focus now turns to a friendly fixture next weekend, offering another opportunity to fine-tune ahead of the Essex League season opener against London Eagles.
Plenty to build on, plenty to be excited about.
