Harlow’s Mavis guest of honour at VE Day 80 memorial service at Westminster Abbey

History / Sun 11th May 2025 at 09:31am

A HARLOW woman was a special guest at the Memorial Service at Westminster Abbey, part of the VE Day 80 commemorations this week.

Mavis Lilley, aged 94, was accompanied by her family members, a number of whom had served in the army.

Her daughter Sarah told YH: “She was thrilled when Prince Edward came over to her, stooped down, held her hand and chatted to her about her memories of being evacuated in WW2, along with her twin sister Pat”.

Mavis moved to Harlow from Woodford in 1958. Her husband Eddie had been relocated as he worked for Radbornes Dairies.

Mavis worked as an enrolled nurse for St Margaret’s Hospital in Epping for many years (Beech Ward).

Mavis moved from Woodford to Harlow 67 years ago, with her husband Eddie when he was relocated to the New Town whilst working for Radbornes Dairies as a milkman.

They have lived in the Potter Street area for many many years.

Thank you to Mavis for representing Harlow at such an important occasion.
