EVER wondered what goes on up in the church tower when the bells are ringing?

Come to the Bell Ringing Open Morning at St Mary, Churchgate Street, on Saturday June 7th from 10am to 12pm.

A spokesperson said: “Our impressive bells weigh up to 935kg, spin a full 360 degrees and are rung manually – come and see how it works and even have a go yourself!

“We’re actively seeking new recruits, but everyone’s welcome to come and have a go. You don’t need to be a churchgoer (we have some who are, some who aren’t).

Younger children can try gentle chiming but from age 11 it’s possible to learn to ring properly.

“Access is from outside at the NW corner of the tower. A short wait might be necessary if it gets busy.”
