Former St Mark’s pupil and now British Army medic takes part in military exercise on Russian border

A BRITISH Army medic from Harlow has taken part in a major military exercise close to the border with Russia.
Private Kara Bull, 2 Medical Regiment, is currently deployed to Estonia where she provided medical support for soldiers on Exercise Hedgehog.

Over 3,000 British Army troops took part in the multinational exercise which involved 17,000 troops from 12 nations.
The exercise, which ran from 9 to 24 May, had two purposes. Firstly, to test the ability of the Estonian armed forces to respond to potential attack by Russia and, secondly, to practise the rapid and large-scale deployment of allied forces to Estonia.

Kara, aged 20, was born in Harlow and attended St Mark’s West Essex Catholic School. As soon as she completed her GCSEs, she went into Army training after passing an assessment centre.
She said: “I joined the Army because I didn’t want to carry on studying but to do something different.”
Kara carried out her basic training at the Army Foundation College in Harrogate. She said: “It was tough because coming out of Covid I was around my family all the time but then went straight to not seeing them for six weeks.”
Kara’s assessment centre set her up for a role in the infantry but, while at Harrogate, she had a change of heart, saying: “I switched to the medics because I wanted to help people, and it was more interesting.”
Kara completed her Phase 2 training as a combat medic at Defence Medical Services in Lichfield. She said: “It was very interesting learning all the different parts of the body. The way Lichfield was run was really good, you get all the help that you need.”
After finishing her medical training, Kara was posted into 2 Medical Regiment. She said her most enjoyable times in the Army have been: “Deploying to different places, getting to travel, working with different nations and making new friends.”
Kara has deployed to Norway, where she provided medical support at an Army winter sport event involving the luge, skeleton and bobsleigh, and to France and Germany.
Of her experience in Estonia, Kara said: “It’s good but the weather could be better, it’s been snowing with the temperature in the minuses although the sun is out now.”
While in the chilly Estonian forests, Kara and fellow Army medics warmed up with a brew during a break in training to mark National Tea Day.
As well as taking part in Exercise Hedgehog, Kara’s regiment is supporting Operation Cabrit, a six-month deployment to Estonia that will see her return home in September.
Operation Cabrit is the name of the UK’s operational deployment to Estonia where British troops from the 1st Battalion The Mercian Regiment are leading a multinational battlegroup providing security for the Baltic nation.
Kara said: “I will be going home for two weeks in June to see my family and my partner before coming back here to finish the tour. This is the longest I’ve done away from family and friends. My family is very supportive, I try and call and FaceTime them as much as possible and stay positive. They are very proud.”
The Royal Army Medical Service (RAMS), which includes Kara’s regiment, deploys at short notice anywhere in the world to provide medical support. The RAMS will be there to maintain soldiers’ health and provide the very best patient care.
Exercise Hedgehog serves as a Forward Land Force (FLF) mission rehearsal, providing the opportunity for the FLF and allies and partner nations from across NATO to deploy to Estonia.
Thousands of British troops travelled from the UK to Estonia by road, rail, sea and air in less than 48 hours. The mass transit of troops demonstrated the British Army’s ability to rapidly deploy a large-scale force to support a NATO ally that borders Russia.
Thank you all in the military for your service.
Well done Kara, take care. Thank you to all of you out there.
What a great example and an inspiration to our town.
Firstly why are woman in the army? 🙄 it's a man's job and secondly why are we anywhere near Russia's border when our own borders need protecting? 🙄
Amazing take no notice of Deborah a great job done Kara 👏 👍
A great role model for young girls and women. Thank you Kara.
Well Mark personally I think woman are a hindrance in the armed forces, a woman is not physically as strong as a man and in times of trouble I certainly wouldn't want to rely on woman protecting me rather than men. Why are we anywhere near Russia again when our own borders need protecting? A great role model you say Seamus? Yes how wonderful to shop our young woman abroad to protect foreign lands, absolutely fantastic 👏🏻. I'd say a better role model would be to show girls that career is definitely much less important than raising a family and to show girls to play up to there natural strengths instead of shooting guns and trying to be men 🙄 honestly all this girl power rubbish is getting soooo boring now. Poor Kara shipped off to a foreign land for what? What is she fighting for? Wake up people 🙏🏻
Well Deborah, I am Kara's Farther, and let me tell you one thing, this young lady my Daughter decided to Join when she was 15 and went away at 16, she passed her Infantry test which she had to compete against other Boys her age and men, who sadly a lot didn't pass, so when you say id rather a man to protect me than a woman well, it shows you don't know how the training works, clearly reading rubbish in social media, and for your information and if you read the article correctly we are a part of NATO so all of our service men and women have to go to Europe at some point, we as a family are very proud of Kara and believe me if I could I would be right next to her. Thank you all for your kind and supportive words,
What the actual fuck DEBORAH.. Who the fuck are you anyway.... Women have every right to stand for our country as much as men.... And I'm sure kara wouldn't of got as far as she has if she wasn't strong enough Can't believe you are being so negative about a 20 year old girl that obviously has ability to stand along men and want to be recognised
Deborah, what a narrow minded person you must be, throughout history women have played a vital role in supporting armed forces around the world, without the backup in medical and logistical support all armed forces across the globe would not be able to function, The level of training in the UK military is exceptional so much so that other countries send personal here to be trained, Some of our best fighter pilots are women! Due to the changing face of modern warfare woman also play a bigger role on the frontline and are equally capable as male colleagues, Can I suggest you go away and do some research into the role of woman in warfare it might just open that narrow mind of yours, I am sure Florence Nightingale would a good place to start.
Freedom of speech. You don't have to like what I say but I'm entitled to my opinion. If needed too then she would have to use a gun Pedro. I would not sacrifice my daughter in this day and age, England was something to fight for years ago but now it's a shell of itself and it's devastating. I hope Kara stays safe and realises in time that she is being used
I would not let my daughter be sacrificed for this country, what is she fighting for? To protect the illegal immigrants that we let into our country weekly? Or is it to fight in a war against Russia that has nothing to do with England?' I wouldn't let my daughter be sacrificed for our government and I hope Kara stays safe because if push comes to shove she will have to pick up a gun if needed. I don't want WW3 and I don't want our army in a foreign country for something that has nothing to do with us. We should have troops protecting our borders right now but it's not happening. BTW no need to get so shirty with the comments people I'm allowed my opinion it's called freedom of speech. I've not said anything nasty about Kara I just have a brain and physically men should be in the army and woman not.
Don't worry Pedro you'll wake up one day 🤞🏻
Well done Kara, you keep going girl, live your dream, continue letting your strengths shine through and be proud of all you’ve accomplished. Deborah, I think it’s best you stick with the washing up love, perhaps it may even help clean out your negative and outdated thought process.
