Paving works on Broad Walk in town centre under water

News / Fri 13th Jun 2025 at 06:49am

THE paving development on Broad Walk in the town centre appears to have hit a problem as most of it was under water on Thursday afternoon.

Work between Starbucks and Primark were flooded as it looks like they may have hit a pipe.

A Harlow Council spokesperson said: “We are rebuilding the town centre and one of the first parts of that comprehensive rebuilding is the transformation of Broad Walk. This is a complex project and whilst it may appear simple at first glance, there are a significant web of utilities underground which must be carefully navigated in order to complete the programme.

“Earlier this week, the construction site at Broad Walk was subject to flooding following an issue involving a water main. Whilst the site was flooded there was no risk to pedestrians or surrounding businesses. Affinity Water was notified and arrived on site quickly to cap off the main and pump the flood water out of the site.

“We’re pleased to say that thanks to this swift action the site is clear again and works will not be held up as a result of the incident.”

Honestly this has been going on for far too long. Harlow town centre is a real eyesore at the market end. I feel sorry for the businesses that face onto this.

The best way to describe Harlow Town Centre and surroundings road works, is easy . A Blot on the Landscape . Lots of of talk about redevelopment taking to long . Our once great town is now a complete Embarrassment .

Too long !! I think the company are taking the p### as well as a big chunk of our money as rate payers. Strange no comment from Dan.

The rate of paving work rather matches the slow decline of Harlow. How any Harlow councillor or leader can look at the paving progress and be happy with it's progress or lack of, is beyond most residents understanding. Can you imagine if Harlow residents witheld their council tax and paid it at the same glacial pace? The council would soon move itself and it's contractors. If it's flooded then surely the job has not been done properly as to move the water away and so will flood again meaning another lift and replace. Sort it out, we are getting tired of payed twice, three times even four times for jobs you have signed off as done properly.

I can't help wondering if the company doing the work is on day rate, it had a set time contract with penalties to pay for each day they go over. I'm sure it's not the latter.

I remember back in the 90s when the market was there. Every man woman and their dogs went it was so good and looked nice. Now and believe it of not I have been to war torn country's that looks better. Harlow council don't care anymore and can't be bothered.

All I can say is they built 3 tower blocks quicker than paving the town centre. With my own eyes, I counted 11 guys only one of them was laying slabs down. If they all done what they was supposed to be doing it should take a couple weeks max. When they refurbished the phyc wsrd on PAH I done the slabs on my own in a week. 🤔🤔

Harlow's great years of the 70's and 80's have gone and will never ever be the same again.

Our once great town is a shambles, everything started at once. A bloody monkey could have planed it better for a handful of monkey nuts.

Putting in what looks like pavement level flower beds is a daft idea try navigating round them using a white cane. The only thing they will be good for is doggy toilets.

John Macer, thats what happens when you have a council Leader who has no knowledge of what has gone before and no experience of regeneration. Readers will recall that brick planters were constructed many years ago so that they could be seen and would not get trampled on. These were removed to save the cost of replanting each year and keeping them in good order. Those along Cross Street are full of weeds and have never been maintained. We were told we would have the best Town Centre in the UK, of course no-one said when this would be, to date even Epping, Ongar and Hoddesdon put Harlow to shame.

A story a few weeks ago said this is costing us £7 million. How exactly has £7 million been spent?? I'd love to know.
