Labour government pledges extra energy bill support for thousands of families in the East of England

News / Mon 23rd Jun 2025 at 01:00pm

ALMOST three million more households – including 250,000 additional families in the East of England – will receive support to help pay their energy bills next winter, as the Labour government sets out further action to ease the cost of living for families nationwide.

The Labour government is acting to support households in Harlow by expanding the Warm Home Discount, which provides £150 off winter energy bills for eligible families. Under the proposed changes, a total of 6.1 million households would receive the discount next winter — up from 3.4 million currently.

Alongside this, Labour has committed to accelerating a national energy debt relief scheme, helping households trapped in energy arrears to reduce their costs and get back on track.

Chris Vince, Labour MP for Harlow, commented:
“Labour’s announcement today will make a real and lasting difference to families across Harlow and our surrounding villages. Too many people here have faced spiralling energy bills and uncertainty about the future, this plan offers them hope and stability.

“Labour is committed to ending our reliance on volatile fossil fuel markets and building a secure, homegrown energy system that protects working people from future price shocks.

“Through our mission for clean power and the practical support announced today, this Labour government is taking real steps to bring down energy bills and put money back into the pockets of hardworking families in Harlow.”

Prime Minister Keir Starmer said:

“I know families are still struggling with the cost of living, and I know the fear that comes with not being able to afford your next bill.

“Providing security and peace of mind for working people is deeply personal to me as Prime Minister and foundational for the Plan for Change. I do not doubt that, like rolling out free school meals, breakfast clubs and childcare support, extending this £150 energy bills support to millions more families will make a real difference.”

Energy Secretary Ed Miliband said:

“Millions of families will get vital support with the cost of living this coming winter, demonstrating this government’s commitment to put money in people’s pockets through our Plan for Change.

“Labour is also accelerating proposals to introduce a debt relief scheme, which would target unsustainable debt built up by households in Harlow during the energy crisis.

“This would help to cut the costs of servicing bad debt, which currently contributes to higher bills for all billpayers.

“This additional support for households across the East of England complements the government’s mission to make Britain a clean energy superpower, delivering energy security and bringing down bills for good.”

Wheres the cash come from, perhaps the winter fuel allowance stolen from o.a.p.s last year , and personal independents payments to the disabled, dumping in the skip waspi women and post office workers whose money has not been returned or compensated . Labour for the people. Don't make me laugh. 22% rise to well paid doctors , 15% rise to train drivers on £60K a year. Up to 250,000 children in poverty.

Or maybe just cut out the middleman! - Perhaps, the few of us who pay tax should just pay it direct to the energy giants. That way we could cut out all the civil servants and town hall employees who dream up and dole out all these handouts.

Here here to all of comments so far. Labour are not giving anything no matter what words they choose to disguise the real truth behind he's pretense of helping the people. He gives so little but claws back so much so in fact he's giving Nothing. Kier starmer does not know how it feels to be in our position because he's pockets are bulging with what he takes from us. He has no idea & neither does he's labour party. Starmer & Reeves just want their names in the records of achievements. Well that's not going to happen because people will remember this labour party for what they have done to the public , the families & everyone in different ways it has killed the trust in this term of government . Labour will not be voted again as they have gone against the disable the pensioners the hard working families schools just about everything. They should be voted out ASAP.

From our mp"“Labour is committed to ending our reliance on volatile fossil fuel markets and building a secure, homegrown energy system that protects working people from future price shocks." Can Mr Vince explain then how that works with the Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, Ed Milliband shutting down our own gas fields and awarding a 10 year gas supply contract to the Norwegian Governments gas company? Or perhaps Drax power station that burns biomass made from rare Canadian forests being cleared and turned into pellets, that is then shipped in a diesel tanker to Drax to the amount of 6.5 million tonnes a year whilst recieving £6 billion in green subsidies.

I think the plan is to build more power stations. Hopefully, this will stop our reliance on fossil fuels. We desperately need to be more self sufficient. This is very important as we live on an island. I do hope this stops the countries dependancy.I know it's going to take time .I am afraid we are going to have to be a bit more patient. It will take at least ten years to show. We cannot keep shifting governments all the time this does not create stability and we always have to start from scratch.Better I think to try to effectively educate the government we have. I think the wintery fuel allowance is back on now. Do we will have to see what the next budget holds. We maybe just need someone to clarify the situation a little bit more. Unfortunately I am aware that everything takes time. But we have great organisations that stick together for the public.Never forget that. I think the girl allowance is now going up. I can only suggest we hopefully have got more jobs coming to Harlow over the next few years. Which will bring some more money into this town. That maybe the sweetening pot we need to get our infrastructure back to the plate. And we can see that Pah has had a little more investment. So let's try and see the bigger picture and focus on our town.Because I have a feeling that is going to be key to the future of Harlow. Now you can rip me to bits guys.lol
