Passmores Learning Community Head pledges to keep schools open during heatwave

Education: Secondary / Mon 30th Jun 2025 at 09:55am

THE CHIEF executive of the Passmores Co-Operative Learning Community has written to all parents and carers regarding the weather conditions.

The schools concerned are: Passmores Academy, Stewards Academy, Purford Green, The Downs, Potter Street Academy and Pear Tree Mead Academy.

Mr Goddard’s letter is below:

Dear Parents/Carers

I hope that you are doing ok in the heat.

This is just a little reminder that PCLC schools will remain open in all weathers if at all possible. The heat today means that we have reviewed the activities taking place to make sure they are suitable and are ensuring that water is available to students throughout the day.

We will ensure that all children are able to be in a space out of the sun if needed at break and lunch also.

The weather in this country has changed so we need to be aware of the new conditions and change accordingly.

We will remain open as always to support our families.

This makes total sense! Meanwhile sfg students released early to prob play out in scorching heat as opposed to being in an air conditioned classroom getting valuable teaching time. Enjoy your tanning sfg teachers :(

I wonder? On new school builds, are they mandated to have air conditioning in each class? If so and given most have flat or low apex roofs, are they mandated to have enough solar panels on all the roofs to provide the school with free electricity to run the A/C in the summer and heaters in the winter?

I don't understand why everyone's got so uptight about sfg closing early. They are in container style classrooms and the aircon doesn't always work.

They are closing for the welfare of the children as it gets so hot in those classrooms with no air. Only certain rooms have aircon. I wouldn't like to be working at passmores in this heat.

Sorry there is no reason for the the schools to shut it's just another excuse for teachers to have more time off!! Let's face it slightest snow fall in winter and guess what it is then too cold!!!

Ti remember having to go to school in a heat wave. I don't think we had a day off. Even in the snow I had to wait at the bus stop knowing that the bus was not coming. ..I do feel that children should be protected and have all the rights that everyone else in the workplace do though. It's a hard life for them. They haven't got the surface area to cool down.I can't stay out for long on the sun.But we never had air conditioning and I am still alive.

I would imagine the SFG teachers are not happy. Don't blame them they dont make that decision. I agree that in such a strict school with strict rules and fines for parents who take their children out of school and lots of rules around time management. The fact that they can just close early due to some heat is out of touch. It seems rather one sided to me.

It wasn't only sfg, markhall also closed after lunch. Stef why would the teachers be sunbathing...lol. They didn't get to go home early they still had to work. 🤦‍♀️. Plus sfg classrooms are not built for this heat air con dont work all time andwinter heating dont work always. So stef they did the right thing letting them go home.
