CHILDREN from the 1st Great Parndon Cub Pack have been getting their hands dirty in a new gardening project, thanks to support from Harlow Wickes and a local garden centre. The project is part of the Cubs’ work towards their Gardening badge and is already teaching them the basics of growing vegetables and the importance of healthy eating.

The Cub Pack embarked on an ambitious project to create vegetable planters from recycled pallets and gravel bags. This hands-on activity is part of their journey to achieve the Gardening badge, which involves learning about plant growth, maintenance, and harvesting. The project will also link to their Cooking badge, as the cubs plan to use their homegrown produce to create and taste various recipes.

Harlow Wickes played a crucial role in getting the project off the ground by donating general-purpose compost, enabling the cubs to fill two of their homemade planters. Mags De’ath, Group Lead Volunteer for the 1st Great Parndon Scout Group said “We are pleased to say the 1st Great Parndon Cub Pack have made a good start to their gardening project. The cubs enthusiastically cleared weeds, filled the planters, and planted the vegetables, thoroughly enjoying the process.”

This community collaboration not only provides the cubs with valuable life skills but also fosters an appreciation for nature and healthy eating habits. The 1st Great Parndon Cub Pack looks forward to a bountiful harvest and delicious cooking experiences.
