Iconic Zig-Zag bridge in Harlow gets a makeover

Communities / Sat 12th Jul 2025 at 06:15am

VOLUNTEERS have started the huge task of repainting Harlow’s iconic zigzag railway footbridge.

The project will be carried out in phases over the coming months. The next community day is planned for September.

The bridge connects Harlow Town Park to the River Stort Valley.

Harlow Council would like to thank the volunteers from the Friends of Harlow Town Park Group, Rainbow Services and council staff and Colas, Chasberger, Equans and Raytheon for allowing their staff to take part in this community project.

Amazing effort by all involved. I remember as a kid playing down by the river and the zig zag bridge. Thank you to all those who gave/give their time to bring back the bridge to it's former glory.

It used to be part Burnt Mill school cross country coarse in the 60s and 70s, a bit of a killer on the legs on the way back to school I remember.

Is the bridge going to be repaired? Looks like the concrete is spalling underneath.

Great initiative! Congratulations to all involved! Maybe the council can also take this forward for a check of the bridge, if any structural improvements would be needed
