St Mark’s West Essex Catholic School: With the school set to be demolished, a personal reflection by our editor

Education: Secondary / Sun 13th Jul 2025 at 02:17pm

ST Mark’s West Essex Catholic School is celebrating its sixtieth anniversary.

This summer, the old building is set to be be demolished and a new build to be put in its place.

If all goes to plan, the new build will be ready by 2028.

On Saturday, the school opened its doors for a few hours, so that former pupils, could for the final time have a look their old school.

Your old school is always a very subjective matter. For some, it was a place they couldn’t get out of fast enough but for others, it was the happiest days of their lives.

Your Harlow editor, Michael Casey went there in the seventies. He is a member of a Facebook group where the Class of 1978 reminisce and occasionally meet up.

Even amongst the class of 1978, there is a divergence of opinions on the experience people had but there is also a deep affection for the fellow classmates as well as the teachers that inspired them.

Michael went down to the school on Saturday morning and has produced this personal video diary.

He can’t speak for the many thousands that went through the doors. He can only speak for himself.

This film is dedicated to Anthony O’Shea, Judith Pieris and Kelvin Evans.

Michael Casey says he is member of the Class of 1978, which I regard as a vintage year. The Guardian reflects on it as follows: https://www.theguardian.com/uk/2008/dec/29/nationalarchives-past

I was one of the original pupils the very first year St Marks opened. Sorry to see the old building is being replaced , i walk past it every time i'm in town. Maybe they could save some the bricks and engrave them with year it was built and sell them for nostalgia.Just a thought.

Where will the pupils go while St Marks is unavailable?

I suppose all the schools built with the new town will come to the end of their natural lives around now. Brays Grove/Passmores, Burnt Mill and Mark Hall have already either gone or been updated. I left Mark Hall in 1971, and I know I wouldn't recognise it at all now.

It is very sad that memories will be lost.Local history is a map of our lives and I think it should be celebrated as a part of your iconic past in some way.

Hopefully they'll sort out parking, the road is an absolute nightmare and parents parking all 4 wheels on the footpath to try and avoid the red zone

Perhaps the students might be temporarily schooled in porta-cabins in Holy Cross primary, as was St Marks' first year cohort. Moving from the cramped, damp and noisy temporary classrooms to the new building complex was something we looked forward to.
