Harlow MP Chris Vince issues statement on the flying of flags across town

CHRIS Vince, MP for Harlow and the villages, has sent us the following statement about flags.
Mr Vince said: “Over the last week, we have seen St. George’s flags and the Union flag flying across our town and villages.

“These flags should be symbols of our shared history, our shared values, and our shared future. They remind us of the generations who came before us, of the sacrifices made in the name of freedom and fairness, and of the pride we feel in belonging to this great country and this remarkable community.
“These flags have always been significant in my life. These are the flags my father served under, the flags my grandfathers served under, the flags I walk beneath each day as I go to represent the people of Harlow. It is a cornerstone of who we are – not as individuals, but as one people bound together by common cause. Most of the flags we see have been affixed to streetlamps, which are the responsibility of Essex County Council. It is ultimately their choice what happens with the flags.
“But let me be absolutely clear: there is a massive difference between flying the flag and committing acts of vandalism. Across the country, we have seen cases of paint on shops, council buildings, and private property. That is not patriotism; it is criminal damage. That is not pride in your country; it is an insult to the values the flag represents.
Harlow is a place defined by generosity, kindness, and pride. I have seen, time and again, the remarkable way our community comes together in moments of challenge and in moments of celebration. I hope that the flags we see are symbols of pride and are not being used as tools of anger or hate.
I, like some of you, have seen recent videos from across the country showing horrific racist incidents.
Harlow is a welcoming place. It is something built into the very fabric of this new town, which welcomed people from across the country. As your MP, it is my duty to this town to call out racism when I see it.
Because true patriotism does not divide, it unites. Our flags should never be used as a weapon. It is a reminder that we are stronger when we stand together, when we celebrate our differences, and when we remember the sacrifices made, which means that we can fly the flag with such pride.
I think the flags have brightened up our town. It shows we are a patriotic town and believe in English values where charity begins at home. They are not interfering with traffic so should remain.
Chris vince. At what point do our national flags change from being symbols of "pride and unity "to "hate and racism"? Did you not see the black lady and two children who were there? You are the ones sowing division by making stupid statements like this. The vast majority of Harlow people support the flags as was demonstrated by the shouts and horn blowing last night. Again Mr Vince I keep telling you how important it is to educate yourself on a subject before making statements. If you fail to do this you will continue to look foolish.
If we view the flags as a symbol of the things we believe in, community tolerance and helping others, then the original intention of the flag raisers to stir hatred in our town fails.
Absolutely brilliant statement. As a woman of mixed heritage I am growing increasingly worried to live in this country seeing the hatred and racism growing by the day. Great to see that Chris is calling a spade a spade. Well done Chris
Is this the same bloke who voted to remove the winter fuel allowance from pensioners? He was very quiet then I recall. Not a peep out of him about it. Just did as he was told and the elderly be damned. I'd love to say more about him but the editor would remove the post.
Good statement. It's fine to be proud of your country, but when that moves into the vandalization of public and private property then that is very much not ok.
Dm - I think Chris is likely referring to the other story on the current Your Harlow front page where arrests for racist abuse have been made in Basildon over the weekend over people spraying the England flag on other people's houses and then shouting racist abuse at people. It's well known that the flag isn't racist, but let's not pretend that some people in this country like to use it for racist reasons.
After numerous and current governments making feel like second class citizens it's refreshing to see there is hope....everyone should fly the flag with pride.
I think the biggest problem is that the Union Jack and Flag of St George are, due to certain parts of society, linked to the far-right. You don't have the same connection with flags flown in Scotland, Wales and even Cornwall. But due to the actions of some in society, the flags are now linked to the rise of the far right. Recently villages were flying the flags for VJ day celebrations, a mark of respect for those who went before to secure our freedoms. But when you see the anger and hatred by flag waving mobs outside of the Bell Hotel it certainly doesn't make you proud of a country that has a long history of opening our borders to those in times of need. We never seem to learn from history. Rounding up of groups of people, for one reason or another and punishing or deporting them has horrifying consequences that echo through time. I will leave you with a quote from history "The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing"
More flags are great, it’s a good idea, but I would like this to be a government or local initiative, not something that’s driven by some far right or another group that does not represent me. Plus, on the same logic, we can just use public property unlawfully for any idea we want to advertise and council should just approve by default after the action was done. If it works for this, then it should apply to other contexts as well.
Mr Vice Let’s be absolutely clear Part of your statement is absolute nonsense and people in the comments sit in there saying they are scared of being in this country. Sorry this country has gone downhill since the borders opened. The far right are not all Racist I love the flag flying makes it feel like Home if people don’t like it they know what to do. It’s part of Who we are I am frightened every day we’ve not knowing what’s around the corner or what could happen to my daughter or myself should I be living in fear? No I should feel free and not scared. Everybody is entitled to an opinion. It doesn’t mean you are a far right Some of you people in the comments are lefties typical but less not debate about that now shall we? At the end of the day? This is Harlow. People are proud to put their flags up I see nothing wrong in doing so I hope to see more has the time goes on?
Considering there were people from various DIFFERENT ETHNIC backgrounds there how anyone can say this was racially motivated is beyond me. But don't let the truth get in the way of the lies!
So much to say on flags yet nothing on his part in voting down a parliamentary amendment to legislation in January this year, which had it gone through, would have seen a national inquiry launched into the child rape gangs. Equally silent when Starmer rolled over in June and decided an inquiry should be held after all. Our MP can't even seem to make his mind up on whether the flags are a good or bad thing. Oh dear!
Does flag waving or indeed flag flying improve the life of residents? No. Does it show nationalism? No. In fact I think it shows the opposite. All these so called politicians' use the flag as a symbol to demonstrate what? Are they better politicians? Of course not; just look at the state of the country. And of course does it mean that most of them would be prepared to defend the flag on the frontline or just make bad decisions to send the young to their death. Recent decades show the latter sadly.
Just a quick word. There seems to be another Kim on line. This is not me, so I'm using surname again. You can tell its not me,there's no spelling mistakes . Haha.
@ Jason Fryer - Serious question for you - will you still think they 'brighten up the town' in 6 months when they're all tatty and weather beaten? Assume we've had assurances these people are going to come back and replace them all? That bunting at Staple Tye is already an absolute mess wrapped around the lamppost. It's tragic. Would love to know how many of these flags were produced in England as well. Assuming as these people are so patriotic they wouldn't just buy any old tat off Amazon and made sure the money stayed in the country they love so much, right?
I will not be lectured by a labour politician.
