Former Harlow MP Robert Halfon: Antisemitism must never become normalised

Politics / Thu 2nd Oct 2025 at 04:44pm

MY heartfelt support goes to the families in Manchester whose loved ones were killed or injured in yesterday’s barbaric terrorist attack on their synagogue. For them, and for British Jews across the country, the horror is a chilling reminder that antisemitism, fuelled by extremism, is not history — it is here, and it is escalating.

The rise began after October 7. In 2023, the Community Security Trust recorded 4,296 antisemitic incidents — the highest ever. Last year there were 3,528 more, still 56% higher than before 2023. In the first half of 2025 alone, 1,521 incidents were logged, the second-highest half-year on record. On our campuses the increase has been starker still: from just 53 cases in 2022/23 to 272 in 2023/24 — a more than fivefold rise.

I have seen for myself how Jewish students are targeted: wearing a Star of David invites abuse; protests ostensibly about Israel dissolve into chants against Jews; what should be free expression becomes intimidation. These are not isolated incidents — they are part of the same poisonous current that has now spilled into murderous violence on our streets. Only recently, a Hamas cell armed with weapons was uncovered in Berlin, intent on killing Jews. We must hope the Manchester attack is not a precursor to even worse atrocities here.

This cannot be allowed to become the new normal. Universities must enforce zero tolerance. Government must ensure proper protection for Jewish schools, synagogues and campuses, and ensure every antisemitic crime is prosecuted to the fullest. Britain has long prided itself on tolerance and democracy. If we are to honour those values, we must confront antisemitism with the same determination we confront terrorism itself.

In Harlow we have a proud and vibrant jewish community and synagogue.  Let us make sure that all Jews in Harlow feel safe and secure.

“Those of the Jewish faith should count as much as everyone else”.

Let me say straight off that acts of individual terrorism are unacceptable. Attacking Jews in Manchester because one is upset with the brutal actions of Israel in Gaza is not justifiable on any level. However, as regards antisemitism incidents these have always escalated when Israel is attacking Gaza, not just after October 7, 2023. However, it is true to say the numbers now are higher than ever. To put the current figures into context one should look at the first half of 2009 following Israel's Operation Cast Lead military assault on Gaza that killed 1383 Palestinians including 333 children. The CST said: "The 609 antisemitic incidents reported to CST in the first half of 2009 is more than double the 276 antisemitic incidents reported to CST in the first six months of 2008. The main reason for this record number of incidents was the unprecedented number of antisemitic incidents recorded in January and February, during and after the war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. The number of incidents recorded did not return to normal pre-Gaza levels until April, some three months after the fighting in Gaza ended." Today's figures are clearly much higher. This naturally begs the question: why did the Labour government and the security services not do more to protect synagogues and Jewish schools given the history of escalating tensions whenever Israel is pounding Gaza? Unfortunately, the British Jewish committees are now paying the price in this country for the Israeli government policy. I don't agree with deaths and murders of any kind it's awful. But until the Israeli government continues to dictate the slaughter of Palestinians and the take over of their lands I can forsee this behaviour escalating as revenge attacks in this country. It seems heartbreaking that it is happening. The reason is obvious though it's not antisemitic it is a stand against the treatment of the Palestinian people .This is now migrating into this country because these people are fed up with the Israeli government policy and they are highlighting this in this country to get noticed for the Palestine population. It's revenge at its coldest. The British Jewish community are now unfortunately paying the price for Netanyahu treatment of Palestinians. This is only my opinion.I AM NOT ANTISEMITIC.

If you see the Synagogue attack in Manchester as a stand against the treatment of Palestinian people, then you are an anti-semite.

Anti semitism should not be normalised, absolutely. Breaking international laws should equally not be normalised, bombing whoever you want should not be normalised. What should be normalised is compassion for your fellow human beings

Now it seems we may have a breakthrough. I am happy for the Israeli people to at last be reunited with their loved ones. And it looks like at last the Palestinian people may look forward to peace. I hope this lasts.and they can at last live in dignity.
