Chris Vince: “My focus remains simple: ensuring that the recovery we are beginning to see becomes a recovery that every family in Harlow genuinely feels”

Chris Vince / Mon 23rd Feb 2026 at 10:03am

Dear Editor,

As we come to the end of half term and Parliament prepares to return on Monday, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on my role representing Harlow and the direction our town is heading.

At the start of 2026, I wrote to readers saying this would be the year the economy began to turn the corner.  2026 is the year progress would be felt in households. I stand by that promise.

I know that economic improvement only truly matters if you feel it in your weekly shop, in your mortgage payment, and in the cost of filling up the car. For too long, families have had to stretch every pound. I hear that on the doorstep and in my inbox every week. People in Harlow want security, stability, and the sense that hard work is rewarded. So do I.

There are encouraging signs. Inflation has fallen significantly, interest rates are easing, and government borrowing is down. The UK is currently the fastest-growing economy in the G7. These create the conditions for lower costs and renewed confidence in our country.

We are beginning to see the practical impact. Fuel prices are at their lowest level in around five years. The cost of everyday essentials like meat, bread and cereals has fallen. Step by step, the pressure is easing.

That does not mean everything is fixed, far from it. Many families are still feeling the strain, and there is more work to do to ensure growth translates into lasting improvements in living standards. Progress should never breed complacency.

Harlow is a resilient, hardworking community. We look out for one another, we take pride in our town, and we expect fairness. It is right that Government supports communities like ours, and a strengthening economy is central to that.

My focus remains simple: ensuring that the recovery we are beginning to see becomes a recovery that every family in Harlow genuinely feels.

Yours sincerely,

Chris Vince

Unemployment is up, youth unemployment up and house building down. The construction sector is going backwards with a series of large firms going into administration. Food prices still high and private rents still soaring skywards. I haven't met anyone who feels better off under a Labour government, that is apart from you Chris!

More waffle by our useless MP. Employment is rising under Labour and we have record numbers living off benefits. Droves of our most able people are leaving for better lives and opportunities in places like Italy and the UAE and are being replaced by illegal, unqualified, third world migrants living off benefits paid for by British taxpayers. The country is broken and on a downward spiral. Get rid of Labour.

For me I can best sum up Chris Vince's tenure as our mp so far as, he has represented himself and his party more than any resident of Harlow.

Chris Vance has no idea how this Labour Government is negatively impacting the people of Harlow. He is intellectually weak, cannot see a broader picture and is just a Labour Party 'yes' man. He is not in this for Harlow. He is in it for himself.

Well said David Foreman. Mr Vince insults our intelligence. What planet is is on ? More Labour lies. When was the last time you went food shopping Mr Vince ? Please stop insulting our intelligence. This country has fallen further down the toilet due to your labour government. The billions of our hard earned taxpayers money paying for people that shouldn't even be here. What are you doing about that !? Oh yes ..your smashing the gangs 🙄 Your lot are doing absolutely nothing !! Just letting more illegals in putting pressure on services. making this country and the ppl who are hard working poorer. No respect for our pensioners or anyone else. Girls and women are being raped. Abused and murdered. These illegals should not be here and certainly not out walking out streets. You have a bloody cheek. You have been spending to much time being starmer's lackey. There have been more twists and turns with labour. You lot shouldn't even be in government. Labours manifesto was based on total lies. You lot cancelled local elections last year and tried the same this year knowing it was illegal. Roll on election time !!! You lot are finished !!!!!!!

There are some very strongly stated views above and I wonder how many of the correspondents actually go and vote whenever we have opportunity? It is a well known fact that at our last local elections there was a less than 29% turnout! What does this say about us as citizens? Why do the people of Harlow care so little? It's no good saying "they are all as bad as each other", they are not, there are distinct differences. We need to make the upcoming elections in May a bumper turnout, only that way will we get a local council that truly represents the majority of us.

He thinks we are fools, inflation is 50% above the target, and besides the inflation tracks rate of change, the prices do not go down. We have unemployment rocketing up especially youth unemployment. The reasons interest rates are coming down is to try to stave of a recession, while nice for the mortgage holders, it does not help as the property market is pretty much frozen. Energy prices remain the highest in the world which makes industrial output poor as we cannot afford the energy costs. But at least we have the fiction of helping the environment. Then we have smashing the gangs and boats which is another lie, illegal immigration is up. Nothing on the rape gangs either as it highlights the cover up of the state and the complicity of the politicians and perhaps the ex DPP (I wonder who that could be). Before we look at the traitorous decision to not only give away the Chegoes islands but pay billions for the privilege so starmers mates can be richer. I have in nearly 50 years of life never seen a government which hates the UK so much and is working to undermine it at every level. It is noticeable that Chris is not visible in the town unlike the previous MP who was very visible, perhaps he is ashamed to show his face he f**King well should be.

Just a Starmer yes man, doesn’t give a toss about Harlow, just using Harlow for his own career.

I always assess MP Vince on the work he does for my Potter Street ward. So lets set out any progress he has achieved since being elected on restoring both a doctors' surgery and local area council services. In short he has done nothing to restore either. Policing is not good despite he being asked to make representations to get just one officer to walk our streets. As he is a former teacher the mark on his performance would be G at best in Potter Street. And sadly I do not think that will change.

Doctor, quick over here this man has obviously had a severe blow to his head and is suffering delusions.

Nothing has changed or improved!? NHS still screwed, waiting lists going on forever, A&E still ridiculous. Price of shopping, heating, water is still increasing. Harlow is getting dirtier by the day, litter left for months, housing waiting list for those in need still long..

My thanks go to Kim O'Connor and Marie for their support. In summation, we see 13 preceding comments of which 12 give Chris Vince a verbal battering. The odd one out by Tony Wiseman fails to give any support to Vince. This is more akin to a rugby final score in terms of defeat.

"My focus remains simple: ensuring that the recovery we are beginning to see becomes a recovery that every family in Harlow genuinely feels". How are you actually doing this, surely not by your visits to schools. You ignorred 3 emails from me with suggestions. Falling inflation and lower interest rates historically reflect a failing economy, all we seem to hear from govt is more and more public spending, paid for by increasing taxes. Many OAP's will be getting letters about pension rises, many will also be put into the basic rate tax band. The leadership suffers from poor decision and mind changing. Chris, I voted labour because of how bad the tories were. Sadly labour doesn't seem to get that it needs business to do well for it to have money to spend. How about holding a public meeting to explain it all to us.

Complete nonsense from our placeholder MP Chris Vince. As families struggle with high food and energy costs, a tougher employment environment in an economy where growth has stalled, Mr Vince appears to think there’s something to celebrate. Perhaps it’s the £30bn surplus last month raised by rinsing struggling businesses and strapped workers with record tax levels? Perhaps it’s the year on year rise in joblessness or perhaps the millions squandered each week on hundreds of thousands of foreign born benefit claimants who are yet to put a penny into our economy. This appalling government is moving fast in finishing the demolition job of 14 years of Tory misrule. The public can’t take much more and deserve a Reform government that prioritises business and work, because that’s the way you build an economy that then works for all.

Boris

Chairman-Reform Harlow-how will you improve the Economy? If you can do it, please tell us your ideas now so that labour can put them into place and enable us to all be better off. After all why should we wait for 3 years plus.

Chris, Brent crude is up around 15% on December 2025 so the easing of price pressures may be reversing. One saving grace may be that the actual oil cost in the price of petrol at the pumps seems to be at a lower % than it was a few years ago which means that pump prices will not fluctuate so much. Note, Harlow is very expensive for fuel compared to Suffolk and Norfolk. Why is this (use the govt fuel finder to check-yes, labour have got something right)
