Tributes paid to highly respected Burnt Mill teacher and football scout Pat Walker

News / Thu 26th Feb 2026 at 02:36pm

TRIBUTES have been paid to a former Burnt Mill teacher admired by so many pupils in the classroom and players on the football pitch.

Pat Walker died earlier this month after a short illness.

His funeral was held today at Parndon Cemetery.

Our condolences to all Pat’s family.

Pat was known for his skills as an English and Drama teacher as well as a football coach and scout.

There are two parts to this tribute.

Firstly, we have a tribute from Burnt Mill school.

The second part is a podcast from former Burnt Mill student and footballer, Christian Wheeler. This is a ninety minute insight into Pat’s life as a teacher but primarily as a football coach and scout.

If nothing else, listen out for when Sir Alex Ferguson rang up the school!

A spokesperson for Burnt Mill Academy said “Pat was a much-loved teacher and leader at Burnt Mill for over 30 years. The warmth and care that continue to permeate Burnt Mill stand as a lasting legacy of a man who gave so much to shaping its culture and values.

Throughout his career, Pat inspired countless young people to discover and develop a lifelong love of the arts, particularly Drama. He worked tirelessly to ensure that Burnt Mill became a school renowned for the arts, a vision that was recognised through the award on Performing Arts status.

Pat was deeply committed to supporting disadvantaged pupils, always striving to broaden their horizons. He created opportunities for students to experience theatre, travel abroad, take part in amazing musical activities, and enjoy a wide range of enriching extra-curricular experiences that many would otherwise not have had.

Held in the highest regard by staff and pupils alike, Pat was a truly unique character. He was also great fun to have around – bringing energy, humour, and warmth to the school community – inspiring a generation through his passion, generosity, and humanity.

“All the staff and friends at Burnt Mill and across the Trust extend their deepest condolences to Pat’s family. He will be remembered with great respect, gratitude, and affection”.

Mr Walker was the best teacher, his passion for his football team Man Utd matched his passion for performing arts, his sense of humour was brilliant and his drama studio was a fun and safe place to be. As a student I have many fond memories of drama and Mr Walkers jokes!!, He was a great man and will be sorely missed

Mr Walker inspired me, along with his wife who taught me sociology. I was from a very deprived background and they both believed in me, and made me feel like I could achieve something. I now teach medicine, and am undertaking a PhD. You made all of the difference to me Mr Walker, singing was my therapy, you gave me a voice!

His cool and calm composure never broke, not even during the worst of the behaviour our year group could offer. Always a smile and some sage advice. Plus, I'll never forget the day he hid a remote controlled fart machine in a jacket on the blazer rack to the side of the drama studio. Absolutely the best teacher I ever had, by a country mile.
