ESSEX County Council is shining a light on the important work young carers do and the challenges they face this Young Carers Action Day (11 March).

There are an estimated 10,000 young carers in Essex, some as young as five years old. They provide vital support and essential care for their family members. Alongside this, young carers often balance school, friendships and their own wellbeing.

The 2026 theme is ‘Fair Futures for Young Carers’. This highlights the importance of ensuring every young carer has the same chances to learn, grow and thrive as their peers.

Councillor John Spence, Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, Adult Social Care, Public Health and Integration said: “Young Carers often face significant challenges and pressures while carrying out their caring role. Often sacrificing many aspects of their childhood to care for loved ones.

“It is vital that we recognise the importance of supporting young carers carry out their role, while giving them the opportunities to build strong foundations for their future.

“On Young Carers Action Day, I would like to honour and thank all the young carers in the county for all they do and the difference they make”

Councillor Mark Durham, Cabinet Member with responsibility for the Youth Service said: “We are committed to ensuring young carers have the support, guidance and resources they need to support them both in their caring role and live happy and fulfilling lives.

“Young carers show an incredible level of resilience and dedication, and it is essential that we recognise this and continue to support them.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank them for everything they do and reaffirm our commitment to ensuring they have the help and opportunities they need to thrive”

Many young people do not realise they are carers and may not know about the help available to them in Essex.

Support for young carers is provided through the council’s Young Carers Service.

Support includes:

·       confidential one-to-one key worker support

·       information, advice and guidance

·       carers assessment to identify the most suitable support for their individual needs

·       training opportunities

·       recreational activities that offer time away from their caring role

·       referrals for specialist support, counselling, emotional support and peer support

·       support with transitioning to adult carer services when they turn 18.

The service also works with schools to help them identify and support young carers through the Children’s society young carers in schools award. Alongside working closely with voluntary and community groups across Essex that support young carers.
